Looking for death records for my great grandfather, Halvor Ellefsen born on June 30, 1838 in Bo, Telemark, Norway. I understand he was lost at sea prior to the 1900 census, I don't know the year or any information about his drowning.

He moved to Tromoy, Norway after his marriage to Jorgine Marie Nilsdatter Stuenaes.

I have ancestors who were lost at sea out of Norway that there was NO recording in the parish books. One or two I was lucky enough and they WERE recorded even though they were lost far far away.
You need to go through the parish records of deaths for the area that you feel he had resided in at the time. Without any idea of WHEN he died then you probably have a good number of pages to scan through.

A little parish history for Tromøy and Austre Moland from familysearch:
Contains priest and sexton records from Tromøy parish. Belonged to Holt clerical district until 1747 when Tromøy with Barbu and Austre Moland became Austre Moland clerical district. Tromøy was separated from Austre Moland in 1877. See Holt clerical district for earlier records.
