My family sailed in 1913 on the Kristianiafjord. As a newcomer here how would I start finding names of family members that stayed in Norway?

Johan Jensen (later known as John J. Vickoren) was born 28 Oct 1882 as is laid out in FindAGrave.com
There are pieces of information about this family scattered about on Ancestry.com, WIKItree, FindAGrave, etc. Jeff, to do a thorough investigation those must be gathered together and put into a cogent outline.
I was able to find that Johan Jensen was born on the Vikøren farm in Vik, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway to Jens Amundsen and Ingeborg Amundsdatter.
You can't determine what family was left behind until you find out what family there was to begin with. |

| Thanks for the replies. My grandfather was indeed Johan Jensen born in 1882. I also show his parents to have been Jens Amundsen and Ingeborg Amundsdatter. My grandmother was Karoline Karlsdatter Roed (How do I make the special characters on the keyboard?) I show her parents to have been Karl Knudsen Roed and Bertine Bergesdatter. I do know that she had a brother Knute (or Kinet). I am assuming that there were more siblings, am I wrong? |

One way you that you can get in contact with people in Norway that may know something about your ancestors that stayed in Norway is open contact with owners or managers of a online Family Tree that contains some of your ancestors. Especially a Family Tree managed by someone currently in Norway. Peder (Doug Pedersen) in his post above gave you a hint by showing you a tree owned by Rune Røed on the website My Heritage. I think in order to get full use out of that site you will need join My Heritage. So that would be one way to start.
Another tree is this one on Geni.com for Knut Johan Karlsen Rød son of Karl Bottolv Knudsen Rød and Bertine Bergesdatter Bryggen. This manager of this site does not include any other children of Karl and Bertine such as your grandmother. This site is managed by Mari Røed and if you join Geni.com (a free site) you can easily contact her by sending an e-mail.

A second but more complicated route is to trace your family back in time and use that data to trace some other family members who may have stayed in Norway forward in time. Here is an example how you might start.
Here is a link to the 1900 Norwegian Census for Johan Jensen, his brother Amund and their mother Ingeborg Amundsdtr Vikøren. So do you know what happened to Amund, did he also come to America or did he stay in Norway.

You can also go back another generation in time. Here is the marriage record for marriage of Jens Aamundsen and Ingeborg Amundsdatter in Vik, Sogn og Fjordane.

The original record tells you that Jens Amundsen's father was named Amund Hansen and that Jens was probably born in Bergen in 1855.

This is likely the family in the 1865 Norwegian Census. It looks like Jens is the son of the first wife of Amund Hansen and a second son Ole is also present. Now maybe Ole stayed in Norway and had descendants.

The marriage record also gives her place of residence as Gulteig so I would think that this is her mother and sister in the 1865 Census. I assume that the father Amund Sjursen has died by then.

A word of caution here. I have looked at 3 or 4 Family Trees on Ancestry.com and most if not all of them go off the rails here and do not have in my opinion the correct parents for Ingeborg. |

There are a couple of ways to get the Norwegian letters when typing on a Widows computer. One way is as Jan Peter suggests to copy and paste them into your document. Another way is to set up a Norwegian keyboard on your Windows computer. Use Start, Settings and language to set up an alternate keyboard. You then can learn to use the Norwegian keyboard or toggle back and forth from the English and the Norwegian keyboard. It helps to print out a copy of the Norwegian Keyboard to help you follow what the keys are. You can print a copy off Wikipedia.
Or if you get lucky as I did and inherit my sons older Mac Book Pro your life will be much simpler. On the Mac you simply hold down the alt/option key and hit o to get ø, and same with a to get å and same with ' to get æ and keep right on typing. |

On an ordinary Windows based keyboard, numlock down, hit alt and hold and then type on the numbers keyboard:
0229 for å
0248 for ø
0230 for æ
0216 for Ø (capital ø)
Sorry don't remember the caps for the other letters.
