My 2nd gr grandmother was Sarah(Siri) Thorson, b Feb 10, 1842 in Fjelberg, Rogaland. She died Feb 18, 1933 in Illinois(?). They had a daughter named Thine(Tena) Boyd (Oct 10,1868-July 15,1963) born in Etna(?). I'm trying to find any information regarding their immigration and her husband Joe Boyd(1838-1902), probably English or Irish. Thanks

The US federal census entries for Sarah Boyd in Illinois give you information about WHEN Sarah immigrated to the US, when she married and where Joe Boyd was from. You can search in the US census enumerations for free at FamilySearch.org

Those censuses will also give you the name of her father.

Fjelberg was in Hordaland, Norway in the 1840s. I do not see any birth/baptism record for a Siri Olsdatter or Thorsdatter 1841-1843 in Fjelberg.

---------------------------------
I think your 'Thorson' family actually came from Skånevik, Hordaland. A district found to the east of Fjelberg.

Robert - If you check the US censuses and the FindAGrave information for the persons named Boyd in the county of Illinois where you find your 'Thorson' family - you will learn that there were Norwegian born Boyds and that included "Joe Boyd". FindAGrave information for other early year born Norwegian Boyds there reveal a strong connection to Skånevik, Hordaland.
So you research for these two families is much reduced in scope to one clerical district of Hordaland, Norway. Good luck!

I think you have the wrong marriage Anton.

This must be them:
Bachelor Ole Thorsen Fatland (Vagrant) (24 ¼) and Kari Johannesdatter Dybvig (21 ½)
Marriage 17 July 1836
His father: Thor Nielsen Fatland
Her father: Johanes Johannesen Dybvig

Sarahs death record confirm that her mother was Carry Dudwyg, ie. Kari Johannesdatter Dybvig.

It appears that your Joseph Boyd visited his homeland of Norway in 1900. His birth place is listed as Skånevik. Matches with Hansen's conclusion above.

Link

His return home, does not give any information on who he visited in Norway

The Boyd name origins from the Bauge farm in Holmedal, Skånevik, Hordaland, Norway.

For instance this civil war veteran; John B. Boyd. He was born in Bergen stift, Norway, on March 9, 184i7. Two years after his birth the family emigrated to America and settled in Kendall County some short distance from Chicago. Here the family went into farming. John was raised on the goodsoil of Illinois. At the age of sixteen and of the wishes of his parents, John with several others enlisted in the military service during the Civil War. He enlisted on January 2, 1864, and was assigned to Co. G., 64th Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out on July 11, 1S65

John B. Boyd can be found on the brig Harmoni as "Johannes Bjørnsen (2)", departing Stavanger on May 13th, 1849:
Bjørn Jonassen Johanessen 37 m Steerage
Ingeborg Pedersdatter 26 f Steerage
Johannes Bjørnsen 2 m Steerage
Peder Bjørnsen* 3 mo m Steerage
Guri Bjørnsdatter* 4 f Steerage

#24 Johannes Bjørnesen Tegland
Born 09 Mar 1847, Skånevik, Hordaland
Parents: Bjørne Johanessen & Ingeborg Pedersdatter Tegland

Joe A Boyd might not be related to John B. Boyd, but their origin must be Berge farm in Skånevik. Find-a-grave says Joseph was born 30 JUL 1838, while census-1900 says MAR 1845....

#54 Jens Andersen Røen

Update: Jens moved to Bergen and settled a family there as a fisherman.

This looks like the Joseph A Boyd family in the 1880 with some children born in Norway?

1880

The members of the household other thant John and Sarah are called boarders.

Census data would indicate that two children were born in Norway, A Dina in this census and a Mikael in a different record. These two use the name Nelson in most records.

Dina Nelson also uses the name Christine Boyd in a marriage record

The OP seems to refer to Dina as this person :"They had a daughter named Thine(Tena) Boyd (Oct 10,1868-July 15,1963) born in Etna(?)." But it seems unlikely that this would be a child of Joseph and Sarah.

Also there is a Sivert Boyd in this census.

And a Lars J Boyd

The Mikael Nelson mentioned above is somehow connected with the Boyd couple. Here is some information on him. He seems to be a twin and his brother also came to America.

Numbers 77 and 78 are the twins. Mikael and Elias Nielsen.

I found your Joe A Boyd!

John Askautson Yttre Bauge
Born 30 Jul 1838
Parents: Askaut Johnson Bauge & Gunla Abrahamsdr, Yttre Bauge

Emigration in 1857: #68 John Askautson Yttre Bauge (18 ¼)
His brother Abraham Askautson Bauge, born 19 Jan 1842, emigrated to America in 1861.

Above it was found that Joseph Boyd visited his homeland of Norway in 1900. I'm sure he (among others) met with his sister Mari Askutsdatter at the Tveit farm.

Syvert Johan Olsen Ytre Bauge above is a half-brother (same mother). Askaut died in 1847, and Gunla/Gunnele remarried with Ole Larsen Alsåker,

Ref the houseold of Joseph A Boyd in Pilot, Kankakee, Illinois:
Sivert O Boyd (15) >> Syvert Johan Olsen Ytre Bauge. Half-brother of Joseph A Boyd
Lars J Boyd (45) >> Likely Joseph's uncle Lars Johnson Bauge born 1829, to America 1858. Lars was a brother to Askaut Johnson Bauge.

Good work on solving the John A Boyd mystery Jan Peter. Now I wonder about the two children Tina Nelson Boyd and Hocke Nelson Boyd. I suspect that both of them have different parents and were adopted by John and Sarah. Here is the 1900 Census for the family.

1900
