| Wow I finally got all that information sorted and entered in to our family tree. I use ancestry. Let me ask you a question. When it comes to the last names of these Norwegian families, should I organize them by birth name, (-sen/-stadder) or the eventual family name? ie Haavi, Haavid etc. Or both? Maybe family name in ()? , |

Probably no right answer. I tend to list them by first name, fathers name plus sen or son, farm name. Here are a couple of examples from my Ancestry tree.
Lars Aanonsen Bråstad
1797–1862
BIRTH 16JUL1797 • Bråstad, Øyestad, Aust-Agder, Norway
DEATH 22 JUL 1862 • Støylsjordet, Åmli, Aust-Agder, Norway
2nd great-grandfather
Gunhild Osmundsdotter Klepsland
1793–1875
BIRTH 09 MAY 1793 • Klepsland, Evje, Aust-Agder, Norway
DEATH 11 MAR 1875 • Støylsjordet, Åmli, Aust-Agder, Norway
2nd great-grandmother
When you get closer to modern times then the names become more like the ones we use. For my grandfather born in Norway but died in America, I use his American name. |

| When is it that they actually started using last names? I get the -sen and -stadder. Then I find I get confused. Haavi, Haavid, Hovi, Stønnerud etc. |

Haavi, Haavid, and Hovi all look like spelling variations for the same location.
The genealogy software I use allows for the recording of a name SUFFIX. I have chosen to record farm name(s) there -- which allows me to search for persons in my database by either patronymic, given name or suffix. The spelling variations I find I carefully record by what source gave me that spelling.
As was said above, "Probably no right answer." We researchers into our Norwegian family history have chosen various methods of recording -- ask 10 different Norsk descendants and probably get 6 different answers. Use what suits you and your method of recording your family history. |
