I am trying to find the parents and family of Gilbert who emigrated (sailed) to the USA (Wisconsin) in 1871. He was born in 1848 and died in Wisconsin in 1937. In 1879 he married Inger Lunde in Wisconsin who is descended from Torkel Snodalen.

Although I have a very complete history of the family once they moved to North America, I cannot find any links back in Norway.

In one census document Gilbert refers to his parent as Amund and Mari Gran but do not have any record of siblings or other family from his generation or his parents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The birth date I have for Gilbert is January 11, 1848.

Also, since the family has kept the Gran name since he came over in 1871, I assume they are from Gran Parish? That is where I am stuck.

There is this family living in Gjerdrum, Akershus at the 1865 census. Parents named Amund and Mari, with Gulbrand born January 11th, 1848.

No explanation here for the last name Gran, though.

This is great!

Is there any reason why the name Gran has been added to this or included? Could the ancestors from further back be from Gran?

Amund and Mari were married December 28th 1847. The record is quite detailed; he was born in Ullensaker and baptized March 4 1824, and she June 1820. His father was Husmand Ole Gudmundsen Olstadeie, while her father was Afdøde (deceased) Gaardbruker (farmer) Hans Hansen Asmyr.

Is there any way to find the ship he went over on in 1871. There might be some clue about the name in the way it was recorded.

In the 1900 and 1910 censuses of Gjerdrum there is a farm named Gran. Maybe his parents or family moved there after he left?

Gran 30 9 - - - - Akershus 1910 census for Gjerdrum
Gran 60, 61 14, 8 - - - Akershus 1910 census for Gjerdrum
Braate (Gran) 30 9 - - - - Akershus 1900 census for Gjerdrum
Gran 60 14 - - - - Akershus 1900 census for Gjerdrum

Or he had an affinity for the name and his parents got their surname from him?

I added a screenshot of the baptism place for Gulbrand to the post for his marriage. TinyPic is not working well tonight. Here is Amund, wife and a son in 1875.

Link

For his confirmation in 1863 he is listed as Gulbrand Amundsen Asmyr. However it looks like it states that he left for
Amerika in 1871. The full statement is a little hard to read

Asmyr, where the family lived in 1865, and Bråte, where Gran was located, are neighboring farms just a few hundred meters apart. Map. They are farm number 29 and 30, respectively, in Gjerdrum municiplaity. Here is some current info on part 9 of farm 30, named Gran. The funny thing is that the associated area is set to 0, possibly it was merged with another property at some point, but still lives in the register as a number and a name.

A possibility is that Gulbrand stayed as help on Gran for a period before he emigrated, and decided to take his name from there. Although I wouldn't know how to combine this with the fact that he is listed as a tailor (skredder) in the 1865 census.

Here is the paragrpah in the bygdebook on Gjerdrum on the part of Asmyr where Gulbrand lived. It says that the three oldest sons in the family all emigrated to America, and also seems to indicate that this property was still owned by the same family when the book was written in the 1950s.

Gulbrand fathered a child in 1872.
Marie Gulbrandsdatter was born in Christiania (Oslo) January 11th, 1872.
She died May 27th 1873. Mother was Anne Marie Hansdatter.

Gulbrands brother Hans Amundsen emigrated to Black Earth, Wis in 1870. #25, right page,

This is spectacular. Thank you very much.

I think the last post about Oslo is a different family as Gulbrand left for America in 1871.

Are there headstones/monuments in Norway that might show the death of the family members?

Is there any way to know if there are still members of the family left in Norway?

No.
The father to Marie who was born in Oslo in 1872 and died in Gjerdrum the next year is your Gilbert.
She is born January 1872, which means Gilbert and Anne Marie Hansdatter must have been together in April 1871. It's likely Gilbert emigrated later that year. Marie is born out of wedlock, and the mother could have moved to Oslo alone later in 1971, when she found out she was pregnant.

Reading the death record for Marie Gulbrandsdatter, it states that her father was Gulbrand Amundsen Asmyr, confirmed 4/10-1863. That is your Gilbert.
It seems she lived on Fladby (Flatby) when she died.
Mother Anne Marie Hansdatter has the farmname Braadal attached to her name.
Flatby is next to Asmyhr, while Braadal is a few km's further north in Gjerdrum.
