Kjell Kjellsen and first wife Anne Christophersdatter in the 1801 Census on Grønstad. Seems to have had a son named Even born about 1800.

1801

Thanks so much for all the input from you all! It is so helpful! I have also found a few additional resources, now that I knew who I was looking for. I feel a need to sum up.

Even Kjeldsen, baptized 6 September 1811, and Eli Johansdotter were the parents of Christian Evensen. Even's parents were Kjell Kjellsen and Marthe Michelsdotter. Kjell Kjellsen's parents were Kjell Erichsen and Berte Henriksdotter, who lived at Grønstad-eie in Stange. Kjell Kjellsen was baptized 26 September 1773.

Even and Eli were married 30 March 1842. Based on church records and the censuses for 1865 and 1875, we can see that their family moved around to several farms in Ottestad parish in Stange, Hedmark. They were living at Øvre Linderud-eie when Christian was born 13 February 1848, then at Atlungstad-eie when he was confirmed 4 October 1863. In 1865 however, they were living as tenant farmers at Kaaterud Nedre. Ten years later in 1875, they were living at Engen. So the farm name Engen, which we see used occasionally in the USA, finally comes into the picture.

Christian Evensen married Karen Hansdotter 27 February 1874 in Ottestad Church in Stange. Karen Hansen is probably the girl born 13 October 1844 in Faaberg in Oppland, even though her birthdate is listed as 14 October 1845 in the US (Find-A-Grave). Her parents were most likely Hans Torstensen and Olea Olsdotter, who were married in Faaberg Church 19 June 1834. Karen and her parents apparently lived at a farm called Haavemoen in Faaberg. (The farm is now spelled Hovemoen and is an industrial area in Lillehammer today.) This would explain the name Moe that turns up in the US.

At the time of their marriage Christian was living at Hoberg and Karen at Kjonerud-eie, both farms in Ottestad parish in Stange.

Prior to her marriage to Christian, Karen had a son named Henrik Ingvald, born 18 May 1872, baptized 9 June, with a man named Halvor Larsen, who also lived at Kjonerud-eie. In the US, Henrik Ingvald used the name Henry Evenson. Henry died in 1957 and is buried in Estabrooks Cemetery in Fond du Lac, WI https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/137411936/henry-evenson Henry was married to Edith Gilbertson (1879-1969). I have found no children in this union.

Christian and Karen had son Ole Martin Evensen, born 3 December 1872 and baptized 2 March in Scandinavia Lutheran Church in Waupaca https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/60722/41742_314795-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=41742_314795-00245

This information jives with other birth references and location information for Ole M, so it is presumably correct. It is strange however that his parents are listed as Christian Evensen and Eli Evensen, rather than Karen/Carrie. This could be a confusion on the part of the minister, since Christian's mother was named Eli.

Ole M is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Luxemburg, Kewaunee County, WI https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/75994275/ole-m_-evenson

Ole Martin Evensen married Frances Stahl 27 july 1905. She was from Austria, daughter of Alois and Catherin Zintel. Ole Martin apparently converted to Catholocism when he married Frances. In the 1930 census they were living at 144 Seeley Street in Milwaukee, WI.

Christian, Karen and Henrik are recorded as emigrants 28 July 1882, apparently traveling on the ship Rollo to Liverpool. They arrived in Philadelphia from Liverpool on the S/S British Crown 15 August 1882.

Regarding Christian Evensen's death, I have found different information than that which is cited above. In the church record for Scandinavia Lutheran Church in Waupaca, WI, Christian Engen, parents Even Kjelsen and wife Eli, is listed with a death date 10 January 1885, burial 13 January in Scandinavia Cemetery https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/60722/41742_314795-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=41742_314795-00382 I have not found a grave memorial for Christian, however.

After Christian died, Karen Hansdotter Haavemoen Evensen was married to a man known as Barney/Bennie Bee. He may be the person mentioned above above, Bernd Torgersen Bye. The birth dates for Barney and Bernd are the same: 26 March 1850, and there is other documentation that Barney/Bennie immigrated to the US in 1879, as in the link above for Bernt Torgersen. But Barney/Bennie's middle initial is N. in Karen's will https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/9088/007711478_00863?pid=257379&backurl=https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?dbid%3D9088%26h%3D257379%26indiv%3Dtry%26o_vc%3DRecord:OtherRecord%26rhSource%3D1055&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.263696908.1098894680.1560635263-2012359370.1560635263#?imageId=007711478_00866

Barney could apparently not sign his name, as he has marked the document with an "X", so there may have been a mix-up of the letters "T" and "N" at some point. The initial seems to stand for his patronymic name, but it could stand for some other name, of course. Mr. Bee's grave memorial is here https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/95661029/barney-n_-bee

According to the church record for Scandinavia, Karen died 3 May. The paster spells her last name "By" https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/60722/41742_314795-00000?backurl=&ssrc=&backlabel=Return#?imageId=41742_314795-00499
Her grave memorial states 14 April https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/107945367/carn-bee

Great summary. It's a good rule to ask critical questions when it comes to genealogy, but in this case I don't think you need to doubt the origin of Karen and Barney.
Their marriage record from Scandinavia list the same parents as found in the Oppland records.
