...was born in Holmestrand August 27, 1887. He emigrated to New York May 3, 1907. He was unmarried. Can you find some information about him in the USA? That will be very interesting!!!

You "say" that Mentz Hanson's Brother John Hansen died in 1917. Is it possible to find out if he emigrated from Norway? It will be very interesting to get this information - when he came to you from us?

Not sure. I have yet to see any references to Mentz after 1921 or so. I searched the Denver Post & Rocky Mountain News Obituary database available at the Denver Public Library website for a mention of Mentz Hansen but did not find. (That set of databases begin in 1922)
His naturalization application says that he also used the name Olie Hansen but there are so many Ole / Olai/Olie/ Oley Hansen / Hansons that would be a large search, with such a common name.
There were two Ole Hansens in the obituary database one who died in 1940 and another who died in 1960. It's possible that he went back to that name although, he didn't seem to have a problem being Mentz, otherwise. You might be able to get copies of the obituaries of the two Oles and see if either or neither are him.
His occupation of murer (mason, brickmason, bricklayer, bricksetter, etc) could be searched more thoroughly. I briefly looked in HeritageQuest last evening but didn't find any Eureka! candidates there looking at any Norwegian born person, born 1885-1889 whose occupation included the word "brick." He was probably also a member of the bricklayers' union as his brother was and it's possible that there might be still a union which has records, a long shot.
One other play is for you to contact the Fairmount cemetery and see if the John Hansen is indeed Mentz' brother, and if Mentz bought the plot and if Mentz is buried there also. I enclosed a link to the Fairmount policies which might affect getting access but that attempt to access must come from you.
Perhaps a study of the friends he came to in Denver can lead to other additional possible alternatives.
But in Norway, does he appear as a survivor in any death records or announcements of his remaining family there? That again is something you will have to explore. |
