The oldest traces of the name, known to date, are in Icelandic grammar .
- Proto Norse : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proto-Norse
- Old Norse : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Norse
- Root STANG : https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/stang

260. Mange Ord af denne Klasse forandre Selvlyden i Fit. And s. §. 248; Tand — Tenner, Angl. Tlnner, s. §. 249; Stang. — Sténger (men Als Stanger, Isl. stangir).

Professor Baqué, eminent linguist (Scandinavian languages) of the Sorbonne, during his lifetime, in 1968, certified the Norwegian origin of our name to Nicole STENGER, then her student.

The linguistic era concerned is that of "old Norse"

Iceland was mainly colonized / populated by Norwegians, hence the linguistic community

I wish to establish exchanges with STENGER/STANGER/STÄNGER/STANGE/STANGIR/ ...to deepen the knowledge of the family history

Thank you

Stenger is not a very common name in Norway. The most common Norwegian surnames were originally patronymic, commonly ending with the suffixes "-ssen", "-sson", "-sdatter", "-sdotter" which is the genitive s plus the word sen or son for son or datter or dotter for daughter. The genitive s was often dropped; compare Hanssen and Hansen.

The other common last name for Norwegians is to use the name of the farm that they are living on or even that they or someone in there family once lived on.

In the Norwegian Digital Archives (Digitalarkivet ) there are only 29 people with the last name of Stenger.

Many of them from the county (fylke) of Telemark. Most of them also use a patronymic form as well. For example Gunder Gundersen Stenger from Drangedal parish, Telemark. His last name can probably be traced back to a place of residence named Stenger in Telemark.

You can search the site yourself. There is an English search page as well as Norwegian search page.

There are significantly more Stnager last name.
