Looking for information on father of Anna. She is Kari’s daughter. They left Norway together and came to America and settling in North Dakota. Old family story says Kari and another girl were given jobs in Norway as children making “mush” for 3 nights someone would sneak in and eat it. One the 3rd night when checking to see if the mush was there Gjest Baardsen was there. Word got out he was there and the kings soldiers were sent to wait for him. During this time Kari got pregnant by one of the kings soldiers and Anna was born.
Any information would help. |

Gjest Bårdsen's whereabouts in Norway in the various years of his active "career" are relatively well known, so if you have an approximate year of birth for Anna it might help to locate her and her mother. And of course anything else you may know about them that didn't get stated above, would be useful. Do you know approximately when they emigrated?
Another possibility is to work backwards from occurrences in American records. Do you have any where the last names of Lien or Lyshgan are being used? If Lyshgan is of Norwegian origin, it is probably a misrepresentation of Lyshagan or something similar. |

If your family legend is to be believed, that Kari got pregnant with Anna while Gjest Bårdsen was still on the loose as an active thief, then Kari's pregnancy must have started in February of 1826 at the latest, and Anna must also have been born in 1826 at the latest.
A 1998 issue of Bergensposten (download), a publication for the Norwegian state archive in Bergen, contained some articles on Gjest Bårdsen, including a detailed chronology of his life.
That said, one should also take into account that the family story may have grown as the years went by, maybe starting out with a lesser character in the role as the villain. |

Kari A Lind age 99 died 12 Sept 1901 and was buried 16 Sept 1901. In this record in the Sheyenne Lutheran church in Pekin North Dakota her birthplace was given as Sondre Aurdal, Norway.
Ole Lyshagen's death and funeral/ burial are also recorded in this church as occurring 10 July, 13 July 1905. His birthplace is only recorded as Norway.
Anne Lyshagen's age 91 death and funeral/ burial are also recorded in this church as occurring 19 Feb 1924 and 23 Feb 1924
North Dakota death certificate gives her father's name as Gubrand Lien. Informant Chris Walhood of Pekin N.D.
Gunhild Olsdatter Lyshagen's death at age 19 in Fargo occurred on 25 Aug 1885 with funeral / burial 29 Aug 1885 at this same church. Her birthplace is recorded as Nordre Land, Norway

Grand Forks daily Herald, Wed 25 Sept 1901 page 4:
"On Sept. 19 occurred the death of Mrs. Carrie Lien at the advanced age of 101 years. Mrs. Lien had lately arrived at Aneta, N.D. for a visit with her son, and on her arrival seemed to be in the best of health, but a few days after she began to fail and on the date above the slender thread of life was severed. Mrs Lien was perhaps the oldest resident of the state. Her home was at Colfax, N.D." |

In most family stories there is a kernel of truth.
It appears that Kari Lien and Anne Lyshagen each lived in North Dakota but some of the details in the story may or may not be true. For instance, it does not appear that Kari and Anne came together to America but that Kari came earlier and Anne and her familiy came after.
As for the connection to the infamous Gjest, that may or may not be true, but may be partly true. When famous criminals are involved, lots of families have shades of true stories.
When i was searching a familial connection to the Younger gang, I found their connection to the Dalton gang. Emmett Dalton remarked that oftentimes he would read in the paper that the Daltons did this or the Daltons did that but these events had happened hundreds if not thousands of miles from where the gang actually was at the time the event happened. |

The first column here, taken from Torpa Bygdebook contains some lines about Ole Olsen and Anne Andersdatter. The last place (subfarm) they lived at before emigrating was called Lyshaugen under Vålhovd.
And it looks like Ole Olsen jr. preferred to americanize Vålhovd rather than Lysha(u)gen, turning it into Walhood. His marriage in the middle to the left here.

Interesting at Geni.com. They don't know who Anne's parents are either or are maybe not interested for their purpose. Chris Walhood's first wife Mamie is listed as dead in 1900 but Christ had a rather checkered marital history and a spectacular divorce from Mamie about 1904 and later had two wives (not sisters) at the same time, you know bigamy....

When Storødegårdseie is written in the church book, it indiactes that the person lived on some subfarm belonging to (eiet av) Storødegård.
Here is a (1950) list of farms in Sør-Aurdal. There is an upper (øvre) and lower (nedre) Storødegård, both clickable. One of them has a subfarm called Lien. |
