He was born in Verdal in North-Trøndelag, and according to the Emigrants via Trondheim 1867 - 1930, he left for Duluth in MN September 5, 1905. Will you be able to find information about him in US and what happened to his life there?
Best regards,
Anne B.

This might be a clue. She is married Dec 25, 1909 in the original record, not the 1907 that the transcription says. Also one of the Witnesses is Adolf Lerstad, could be your John Adolf Lerstad?

Married in 1909, husband's first name is likely Sven.

A girl Gurine Lerstad is married in 1909 in Superior Wisconsin in the same church as recorded the burial of John Lerstad shown above. One of the witnesses for this wedding is a Julia Lerstad.

Gurine Lerstad
in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940
Name: Gurine Lerstad
Event Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 23 Jan 1909

Spouse: Gust Fleming
Church Name: Concordia Lutheran
Church Location: Superior, Wisconsin

She arrived in America on the same ship as Julia Lerstad and lists her destination as sister Lina Olson Crystal Falls Wisconsin. However there are some records that indicate that she was in America previous to this trip.

So some work to determine the relationship between all of the Lerstad men and women who settled abound 1900 to 1910 in the region of Minnesota and Wisconsin near Duluth/ Superior. This is likely the baptism of Gurine Lerstad born Dec 20, 1880. Father is Ole Nilsen Lerstad and mother is Johanna Kristensdatter.

And this is that family in the 1900 Norwegian Census.

Of the 25 people leaving Norway carrying *Lerstad in their name a few found in the Emigrants database only one resides at Verdalen at time of departure. The majority are leaving from Leksvik / Lexvigen. Some of the Leksvik people have patronymics associated also: Nicolaisen, and Olsen. What patronymic does Johan Adolf have?

Here J.A.Lerstad b 1873 Verdal is listed as married in 1900 census:
https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01037479003936

One of his children in 1900 is named Nikoline b 1897. Here is a Nicholine Lerstad b abt 1897 in 1910 US:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2PL-9V7

#7 girls half page:
SAT, Ministerialprotokoller, klokkerbøker og fødselsregistre - Nord-Trøndelag, 724/L0263: Ministerialbok nr. 724A01, 1891-1907, s. 17
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20050330040765

At the old fulton history newspaper site, there is a picture of Nikoline Lerstad as a member of a performance group in a Duluth newspaper.

#6 1896 marriage, Johan Adolf was born Lorentzen in Lexvigen and Oline's farm was Hage :

SAT, Ministerialprotokoller, klokkerbøker og fødselsregistre - Nord-Trøndelag, 724/L0263: Ministerialbok nr. 724A01, 1891-1907, s. 86
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20050330040833

So the blood relative must have been Bereth Hage, a sister to Oline, Nikoline's mother?

Also in 1920 census living with same aunt and uncle:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MW18-KJP

Apparently never married and died in 1929:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V4W7-M12

Probably death of the aunt:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V47H-VX7

Probably death of the uncle:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDQ6-8DN

#18 confirmation of Bereth birthdate matches US record:

Possible marriage of the aunt and uncle:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24ZJ-GH3

From the Duluth Evening Herald, Saturday 7 Oct 1899 pg 5 col 1:
"Odin Halden, county auditor, left yesterday for New York, where he will be married to Miss Bereth Hage of Minneapolis. Miss Hage has been visiting for four months at Trondhjen, Norway, which is the birthplace of both herself and Mr. Halden. They will be married immediately upon her arrival from the old country and will come to Duluth at once and will make their home at the St. Louis for the present."

The aunt arriving 2nd time in US:

Regards other Lerstad relationships: Gurina's marriage to Gust Fleming was witnessed by an Adolf Lerstad. In a newspaper account of their marriage license Gust is listed as resident of St. Louis county and Gurina as a resident of Douglas county.

Here in WWII draft registration cards John Olsen Lerstad's person who will always know where John is is August Fleming:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKCC-4NZ5

And Martin Olsen Lerstad's person who will always know where Martin is John Lerstad:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKCC-4NZT

Nels Lerstad bought from the US Federal gov't 80 acres 2 miles south of Brookstown, Minnesota in St. Louis county in 1909. This is along the far southern edge of St. Louis county on the border with Carlton county.

Not much meat on this bone but Adolph Lerstad declared his intention to become a citizen while in Minnesota:

In 1902 Adolph Lerstad, Julia Lerstad and Gurine Lerstad all lived at 429 John av, Superior, Wisconsin, USA. The original post for this topic states that John Adolf Lerstad emigrated in 1905. so either there is another Adolph in the family other than the John Adolf first posted or John Adolf travelled to America earlier than 1905. Or the date is wrong on the transcriton. Also he is listed as Student and I would not think that John Adolf Lerstad would be a student at his age.

Adolph Lerstad
in the U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995
Name: Adolph Lerstad
Residence Year: 1902
Residence Place: Superior, Wisconsin, USA
Occupation: Student
Publication Title: Superior, Wisconsin, City Directory, 1902

Julia Larstad
in the U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995
Name: Julia Larstad
Residence Year: 1902
Street address: 429 John av
Residence Place: Superior, Wisconsin, USA
Occupation: Domestic
Publication Title: Superior, Wisconsin, City Directory, 1902

The spelling of Gurine's last name was also Larstad

Also I have learned that the date for the Directory is wrong. It is for the year 1907-1908.

In spite of the year date I wouldn't eliminate this Adolph just yet. His occupation in Norway was "schoolteacher" so mayhaps he came to US to further his education and actually is a student.

They had quite a collection of Lerstads at 429 John ave in 1902. (Date is wrong should be 1907-1908)) Here is Nels Lerstad there as well.

Nels Lerstad
in the U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995
Name: Nels Lerstad
Residence Year: 1902
Street address: 429 John av
Residence Place: Superior, Wisconsin, USA
Occupation: Janitor
Publication Title: Superior, Wisconsin, City Directory, 1902

So this Nels Lerstad is not the Nels Ludvig Lerstad born about 1868 but Nels Nicolaisen Lerstad born about 1880.

He left Norway in 1900.

link

He spent the next 30 or so years in Superior Wisconsin and can be found in the 1930 Census. I think his age should be 50 not 40.

1930

Probably him

Nels Lerstad
in the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
Name: Nels Lerstad
SSN: 391100967
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Date: 5 Jun 1879
Birth Place: Trondjam, Norway
Father: Nicoly Lerstad
Mother: Nicolene Langos
Type of Claim: Original SSN.
Notes: Nov 1936: Name listed as NELS LERSTAD

From this family

1900

Parents of the father Nikolai Lerstad are Nils Johnson and Gurine Olsdatter Father of Gurine is Ole Nilsen and father of Nils is Nicolay. Both are here with father Niels Johansen in 1865

1865

Named Nils Gustav. A cousin of Gurine

Aha!, The year of 1902 has bothered me from day one. However page one started the names alphabetically from A with no cover page and no date. But after looking at the entry for Nels I started going backwards in the directory until I ran out of names and came to the business section on page 159 There are 182 pages in the book. On page 159 one finds.

R.L. Polk and Co's
City of Superior Directory
1907-1908
Classified Business Directory

So the transcribed date is wrong and problem of the date seems cleared up
