I have been looking for my grandfather in USA for a long time. New tips came here the other day.
In Seattle some norwegian were sitting in a cafe/pub and a stranger entered. When he heard they were talking norwegian, he came over. It turned out they were from the same place in Norway. He became very interested and had lots of questions about his own wife, his farm and so on. His wife and 4 children was back home. He would not tell his own name.
We assume he maybe has left his family?
His name Ole Mathias Olsen . Born Spangereid Norway. 17.10.1978.
Father : Ole Martin Olsen B: 12.04.1847 D: 02.03.1889
Mother: Berte Serine Ariansen B: 1847
I know he came to Ellis Island in 1923.
Anyone in the Seattle area?? |

Thank you so much, but I am not sure this is the right person. Date on census say 27.april 1910. Age at last birthday say 51. Ole was born 17 okt 1878. He would be 31 year that date. Right? And I find him working in Norway in the year 1910.
Oh this is diffecult to find, if there are any answer at all...I cant give up yet..

I see in your earlier topic you asked where his 1906 trip was found. It wasn't found, it was only mentioned by himself that he had been in US 1906- (I think) 1909 in his 1923 entry at Ellis Island. He may have come in through some other port than Ellis or mistakenly answered the question on the form or... something else, don't know.
There was one Ole Mathias Olson, age 26 who came on the Cedric in 1904 at Ellis Island. (Curiously, can find this person in familysearch.org New York arrivals and then connect with the images at Ellis Island but my direct search at ellis island.org was unsuccessful. So its in there but not speaking with all) with wife Olava Lovise, children Ragnhild age 2 and son Ole an infant. This Ole Mathias was a sailor but he and the family were heading to Decorah, Iowa to brother-in-law Nils Ferkenstad.
Searched in the Seattle City Directories in HeritageQuest but found no Ole Mathais Olson / Olsen in any year. There are several entries for Ole M. Olson but none with Mathias spelled out.
Likewise a search in the Genealogybank newspaper base found no Ole Mathias Olson nor Olsen. (This site has very good Seattle and Tacoma and Portland coverage in newspapers.)

I did check naturalization, death, and cemetery records on the above website, but found no one matching your Ole Mathias.
I did not check any record dated before 1923. |

Jkmarler : As children we were told he had been a sailor, but I find nothing about that. 26 year in 1904 could be right, but if he travelled witht his fam to Iowa it is not him.

Grimstad, Sep 3rd, 1940:
His wife Sidsel wants a judge decision that her husband is presumed dead, since she hasn't heard from him since 1929. The Salvation Army and Federal Police have performed extensive searches without success.
