family mystery
shipsbellA ships bell with the writing 'Dygden Fran Abo' AR 1840 on one side and 'Gjuten AF FR. Seipel Stockholm 1841' carries the key to a family mystery. Can anyone help me find out more about the boat that carried this bell? The rumor is that the ship was captained by an ancestor and was also used in the civil war. Have looked called folks-Swedish embassy directed me here. Thanks! rroberts78704@yahoo.com
BorgeNow, I might be on thin ice here, but I think we are talking about Åbo (Aabo) in Finland here, "Fran" is probably "Frän", which means "from", but what is "Dygden"? - maybe the name of a ship? - "Gjuten AF FR. Seipel Stocholm 1841" I think means "Casted by Fr. Seipel in Stocholm 1841". You might check if there is a maritim museum at Åbo which might have any information about a ship built there about 1840.
jwiborgHi, here is a history (in Swedish, unfortunately [B)] ), about a naval vessel called "Dygden" which had many cannons: Click here. The story tells about a war between Russia and Sweden in 1790, in which this ship was involved...
