Anna Olsen and her uncle Andrew C Haugen
BertaHello! I am looking for Anna Gulette Olsen. She was born 30.11.1872 in Skjeberg, Norway. She was a widower who travelled across the "big water" in 1909 with a ship called Oslo. Here is her depature from Norway: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=emikra1&variabel=0&postnr=188580&fulle=true&spraak=n And here she is with her husband in the census 1900: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00113&variabel=0&postnr=3643&fulle=true&spraak=n Add. info: She could been called Andreassen, and she could aslo say that she came from Borge, Selbak, Fredrikstad ( all places near Skjeberg in Østfold, Norway) Her Uncle, was Andrew C Haugen which also emigrated some time before 1900, but travelled to US in 1902 with the ship Angelo. I have found him arriving in New York. He lived in Minnesota. Here is a link to Andrews depature: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=emikra1&variabel=0&postnr=141444&fulle=true&spraak=n Here are his family in the Norwegian Census 1900: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f00111&variabel=0&postnr=1131&fulle=true&spraak=n Does anyone have information about any of them? I am mostly interested with what happened to Anna, but maybe if you have som information about her uncle, then I coud find her?
BertaThank you for the help! Maybe this can narrow things down a bit for me! Where can I search arrivals at Boston? Berta

BertaAdditional information: Anna may have emigrated to her cousin Ole Haugen, which is Andrews son. He is born in 1883 It is said that he was born in Kittson Co., Minnesota, 18.2.1883., In 1922 he went back to America, and that he then was living in Duluth Here is a link to the info at Ellis Island.org: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passRecord.asp?MID=15557199160076500384&FNM=OLE&LNM=HAUGEN&PLNM=HAUGEN&RF=27&pID=604453080762
BorgeHi Just want to point out that the S/S Oslo and the S/S Angelo were not transatlantic liners, but feedership from Norway to England.
BertaThank you for your answer! I have already seen that the ship most likely went from Christiania to Christiandsand and then over to Hull in England. But I think it is difficult to track the route further on.... But maybe sombody does know about Anna in the US, or can just help me find the correct ship`? I mean, it is possible that she went ashore in Canada for all I know. I have searched Ellis Island, but I havent found any perfect match. But there are several Anna Olsen who arrives there, but I guess I have to be patient! Berta [ quote]Originally posted by Borge

BertaI wonder, wasn't The Mauritania the sistership of The Titanic?
BorgeI don't think the Boston arrivals are online anywhere as a searchable complete database, the best thing is probably to get the microfilm from NARA. The Mauretania was not the sister of the Titanic, but was one of the other famous four stackers. The Mauretania belonging to the Cunard Line, while the Titanic was owned by the White Star Line, the ship considered to be the sister of the Titanic was the Olympic.
BertaOk... But do you have any other idea to find her. The Cenus have somone looked in for me, and there ar e to many maybe to narrow her down in any way. But are there other material which I can look in? And I also wonder what NARA is? Is that a National Archive of some sorts? Regarding the boats. If she went from Christiania to England in the SS Oslo. Which port would she ariive in? Wouldn\t that be Hull? Is that far from Liverpol? And how long did the voyage from Chrisitania to England take, and from England to the US? Did ships first land in Boston, and so in New York?
BorgeI think your questions will be best answered if you read the two articles, "Hunting Passenger Lists and Migration via the Port of Hull.
BertaI will read them! Thank you for your help.. I just hope that maybe someone other out there maybe know of Anna and her destiny in the Us... !
BertaI have found some Land Patent Details which I think may concern "my " Ole and Andrew. Here are the Land Patent Details for Ole A Haugen, 1910: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Detail.asp?Accession=108657&Index=20&QryID=22175.53&DetailTab=1 And here are the Land Patent Details for Andrew C Haugen, 1887: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Detail.asp?Accession=MN0450%5F%5F%2E417&Index=1&QryID=22300.95&DetailTab=1 Does anyone out there, now recognise someone? Maybe this is where Your family is from? Any help, will make it easier for me!
BriningHi Berta, Minnesota has a searchable death certificate index on line Click Here You may want to subscribe to the Norway List and post your question there Click Here There are many helpful people there and some with connections to Minnesota. If you subscribe you will receive all e mails posted by others on the list so you can get up to 60 a day, it is a very active list. This site will tell you something about mailing lists Click Here Good Luck Carla
BertaThank you Carla! I found Ole here: http://people.mnhs.org/dci/viewcart.cfm?CertificateID=1172280 so he died in 1958. But it isn't really him, I was looking for. It is Anna I wonder what happend to her... But I hoped that I could be lucky and found Anna via Ole.. But I don'r know.. Mayby via the MHS ( Minnesota Historical Socity) I could find something? I hope I can find her! What I thought, was this: Since Ole is buying land in 1910, maybe he was really buying for Anna?
BriningHi I doubt that Ole was purchasing the land for Anna, it is more likely that he was getting it for himself. Did Andreas have any other children that would have taken over his land in Kittson county? You might try tracking down Andreas' family left in the US and see if you can locate living relatives. They may have information on Anna. I'm guessing that Anna either went to Kittson or Marshal county where Andreas and Ole lived or had land. Here is a list of Historical societies in Minnesota http://www.mnhs.org/preserve/mho/chsclo.html Try contacting the Marshal and Kittson county ones. Maybe they will have some information or can help. Carla
BertaThank you Carla! I have a problem. I havent been able to narrow her down on Ellis Island. And she could have entered the USA in Boston ( Ole arrives at Boston when he has been in Norwy for some time). Do you know how I can get that information? Without going to the US and pay a lot of money?
BriningHi I've looked for her also on the Ellis Island site and haven' found her either. I haven't found the ship Saxonia that Borge mentioned arriving in New York but did find the Campania which left Liverpool March 13 1909 and arrived in New York March 20 1909. The LDS Family History Center has locations in Norway Click Here and you can rent the films for the Boston arrivals from them. Hopefully they are a little closer than the US [:D] You would probably want to call to see if they have them on site or need to order them. You would also want to take a list of ships of the Cunard line for 1909 so you know which lists to look at. Click Here Carla
BertaThank you again Carla! I tried email the historical organizations which you recomended. But the email was not correct. So.. I wonder if you maybe have an other emailadress ( I have also emailed the MHS).? Or maybe someone else? It is quite hard doing this research from Norway! Of course there are internet resources, but it is really hard to get information without paying a lot of money! :) Well.. I have to continue and try. I guess!
edwardjBerta I am doing research about my ancestors from Norway and I live in the USA (Pennsylvania). I sometime use a site: www.immigrantships.net I did a quick search about the ships mentioned in many of the replies and had several hits. Hope it helps Ed Johnson
BertaThank you for the tip Ed! It seems that it is quite imposseble to find Anna. Maybe she had a too commen name.. I don't know. But I can't find her anywhere.. Maybe she even changed her name?? Well..
BriningHi Berta I don't know about the email address. Everyone I find is History@means.net. You could try mailing them, including your email address and ask them to reply to you. Another thing you could try is emailing the Haugens in Minnesota and see if you can connect with descendants of Ole or Andrew. They might have info on Anna. Infospace came up with 76 with email addresses and you could try and limit that to ones near Kittson or Marshal county. The Grand Forks and Fargo North Dakota areas would be close also. It is kind of a "blind" search but you never know when you will get information. I did find a 14 day free trial of genealogy.com if you wanted to try searching the census. I have not tried it but you will have to give them credit card info and then you will have to call to cancel the service before the 14 days are up. They give a phone number for outside the US. I don't know how much it would cost to call from Norway.[?] Click Here You had said that someone had looked on the census for you. Can they find any Haugens in Kittson and Marshal counties to see if she is living with them or check out the Anna Olson's in those counties? Just keep posting queries on message boards and maybe you will get lucky. There are always new people out there starting their search for ancestors so the more places you get the information out to, the better your chance is of connecting with the right people. Good Luck Carla
BertaI am just bringing this topic to the top again.. Maybe someone out there knows anything about Anna? Berta
BertaI have now done a search for the 7 others who travelled with the same ship, at the same day as Anna., and said that they were going to New York. And I can't find them either.. ( at Ellis Island) So.. I find that there are the following questions now: 1. does anybody know that the SS Oslo really came to Hull ? They were said to depart from Christiania at 06.03.1909. 2. At the same ship, there were several going to Boston, Minnesota, Chicago.. Is New York the port for these people. Or is it possible that Anna took a ship that went to Boston instead? 3. Where is Anna in the 1910 census? Her full name was Anna Gulette Andreasdatter (or Olsen), she was a widow,( she could also probably say that she was single I guess....) she was born at 30.11.1872 in Skjeberg, Norway. Her parenst were Grete Kristiansdatter (Kristiansen) and Andreas Pettersen Solli (Sollid) 4. As mentioned before, she had cousins in Minnesota. Berta
BertaHello again! Is there anyone, with the access to the 1910-census with all the information I have on Anna, who can find her in the census? It is only a year ( if even that) after she arrived to the US, so I guess she isn't married.. If anyone, at least could try, and narrow things down a bit, I would be really grateful!
BriningThere is one Anna Olson in Chicago Illinois, working as a servant, age 36, single, emigrated 1909. That is the closest I have come. She is working for a Charles Schueller. Carla
BertaThank you Carla! hm.. It is only 2 years of her age... soo.. maybe! I could try and look into it.. But .. In the census, does it say when she arrived to Chicago? Berta
BriningBerta The only information it gives is the year of immigration. Not much to go on but hopefully a start. Carla
BriningHi Berta Did any other of Anna's family emigrate to the US? If anyone came after her maybe Anna would be listed as the person they were going to see. Carla
BertaI do not know of any other of Annas family who emigrated at all.. So... Her brother Kristian is listed as an sailor or "sjøman" but I don't know if he emigrated.
BertaI try .. and I try.. Is there any way I can confirm that the Anna in Chicago is "my" Anna? I have tried to find people that may help me, but the results are quite bleak.... She has hidden well, Anna.. But this triggers me even more of course... I just can't believe that it is so difficult to find her.. Berta
BriningHi Berta It is really hard to trace women in the US [xx(]. The best I can suggest for Anna and for the Melby's you are trying to trace is to post queries to all of the message boards you can find. Probably one of the largest is Rootsweb which is also connected to Ancestry. Click Here If you do a search on genealogy message board at Google you should find some more to post to. You could try joining the Norway-L mailing list which is a great list. Click Here If you click on help in the upper right corner you can find information on how a mailing list works. Good Luck Carla
BertaHi Carla, thank you for your answer.. Although you may be right, I hope that someone reads my postings here too! :) That maybe I have overlooked something or that any newcomer sees my posting, and can help me a little bit further... Berta
