Identify the Ship My Ancestors Came Over On
FamilyHistorianFamily history indicates my family came from Stavanger, Norway to Illinois via a ship (name unknown). They arrived in Quebec in 1856. I am trying to confirm what ship they came over on and potentially how they migrated from Quebec to Illinois. According to you website, it could be one of three: The Orion arriving July 28 (ID 1438), the Prindsesse Louis arriving July 28 (ID 1536) or the Sostrene arriving July 4 (ID 1721). Names of ancestors who came over: Anna Bergeson and her 5 children: Anna, Hadle, Berge, Anna and Mallene. Also on the ship was a Ole Johnson who later became a neighbor. Any direction you can provide me would be appreciated.
BertaHello! If you post a message on Digitalarkivet : Link: www.digitalarkivet.no Press "Debattfourm" to the left ( in the grey column)¨ And then press : Brukerforum ( in the white to the right) maybe someone there can help youi? I tried to search Digitalarkivet for your Anna, but I couldn't find her. But maybe somone else will?
BorgeI doubt it if anyone are able to help you with this, as there are no surviving records of ships arriving in Quebec or departing from Stavanger for 1856. See Time line - Records to Norwegian emigrants a diagram which shows the most important records to Norwegian emigration. This means that you will not be able to find them on any passenger list, and other sources usually do not mention the name of ship. It might be possible to find them in the outmigrants church records for the parish where they lived, and the date for their departure might help eliminate some ships.
FamilyHistorianThank you f or your response. I have been able to confirm that the ship my relatives came over on was the Talisman. Obit records indicate they came to American on May 17, 1857 which closely aligns with this ships departure and arrival periods (Departs Stavanger April 29 and arrives in Quebec June 15). Next steps would be to identify the passenger list to confirm. I will check out the Digitalarkivet site, but do you have any other recommendations on how to secure a copy of that list (even if it is hard copy)? Thanks so much
BorgeAs far as we know that list does not exist any longer, at least not in any archives or private collections that we know about. There are no known copies. [:(]
NARVEI wonder if you know where this family came from? They lived at the cotters place Haugen at the Indre Sandanger farm in Fister, Hjelmeland kommune, Rogaland Fylke. Anna,s husband Berge Hadleson, b. 1800, died 1852. See "bygdebook" Hjelmeland - Gardar og Folk 3, page 284. I,m very interesting knowing what happen to Anna and his children in Amerika.
