Nelson Gerhard Dahl Peterson/Nelson in Minnesota
maggiNelson with surname Nelson or Peterson left Norway for Hull, England on the Salmo in 1905. He was bound for Minneapolis and sought farm work, according to emigration records in Norway. He married a woman called Charlotte. He must have made some money as an old photo shows him with a car. I can't find him in the Ellis Island registers or Social Security Death Index. Probably haven't hit on the right name or spelling - don't know what he called himself "over there". Any help with information about him or his family/descendants would be much appreciated. Best wishes from Moss, Norway.
BriningYour best bet to find him would be in the 1910 or later census. Unfortunately the US census on line are mostly by paid subscription or purchase a CD [:(!]. This site allows you to search on a name and there are several Nelson Peterson's listed in Minnesota and Wisconsin http://www2.heritagequest.com/hqfinder/hqfinder.asp but you would have to buy each CD You could try posting your query on the Digitalarkivet Debat forum. Click Here There are some people there that have access to the subscription sites. Good Luck Carla
Jo Anne SadlerNelson and Peterson are extremely common names in America. Do you have a date of birth, did he marry Charlotte in Norway or US? Where did he emigrate from? What were his parents names, that would help in searching alternate names. Was he known as Nelson Nelson in Norway or Nils Nelson? [?]
maggiNelson Gerhard Dahl Nelsonsøn was born in Tjøtta, Nordland, Norway 2nd April 1881 with parents Nelson Edvard Strøm Pettersen. He may have used his father's surname instead of the patronymicon. I think he died in the seventies. I believe Charlotte was Swedish and I think they married in the States but I'm not sure. There are dozens of Charlotte Nelsons in the SSDI, and I don't have any other information about her. I've been thinking of ordering a subscription to Ancestry.com's census records, but they are a bit expensive for Scandinavians who only need to access their records occasionally, as each type of record requires a separate subscription. I'll try contacting my husband's old uncle who may remember something about Nelson. Thanks for your suggestions!
Jo Anne SadlerIn the Digitalarkivet: Emigrants from Thondheim I found: Nelson Gerhard Dahl Peters., March 22, 1905 unmarried, born 1881 in Tjøttø, destination Minneapolis, MN, ticket paid in America. In the Ellis Island website, I found: Nilson Girhrd Dahl Pettersen from Throndhjem, date of arrival April 6, 1905, 24 yr, single, ship Oceanic from Liverpool, England. I have an Ancestry.com subscription and using those names and Nelson and Charlotte, I haven't been able to find him or her in the 1920 and 1930 Federal censuses or any of the other databases. [:(] I will continue to try and find them but if you get any additional information, let us know. Is there a possibility that he emigrated to Canada? Good luck [:D]
maggiThanks Jo Anne! I hadn't hit on the right combination of spelling for Ellis Island, so can now check the details . But I've now been told it they think it was another relative who emigrated who married the Swedish girl Charlotte, elderly people get confused, so Nelson might be single or have a wife with a different name. Was told he was in the States. Thanks again!
maggiMe again. Have just checked the details on the original ship manifest, and he was going to stay with his aunt Lina Petterson who had paid his ticket. Her address was 606 + 19th Ave S. Minneapolis.
