Ernest JACKSON Marie OSIELAND MI & NY late 1800s
kcolwell	My GGG grandfather Ernest (Ernst) Jackson d.July 28, 1921. Obit from NY Bible society says: "Ernst William Jackson, 76 years old, of 541 8th St., (Brooklyn) a missionary and agent for the New York Bible Society for many years......Mr Jackson was born in Christiania, Norway, and came here 50 years ago.....He is survived by his wife, Marie; two sons,Oscar W. and Charles E. and two daughters, Mrs. Francis l. Sill of Plainfield, NJ and Mrs. Henry Lintig." He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Thus I conclude he was born about 1845 and emigrated about 1870. According to a letter written by his daughter Huldah (Mrs Henry Lintig) when she was 87: her parents met in Jackson Michigan. The writing is hard to interpet but her mother's last name was OSIELAND or OSULAND or even OSIELUND. Marie OSIELAND's mother died when she was young and her father brought her to Jackson MI with her twin sister Huldah who later lived in Oregon. The letter says they came from Sweden... but I wonder if that isn't some confusion about the time when Sweden ruled Norway as she married a Norwegian. I have searched all the usual US internet sources to get more info about them and wonder if you can give me clues where to look next. I'm new to Scandanavian searching. Why did Norwegians go to Michigan? Thanks for any help. kate
Brining	The [url="http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar&spraak=e"]Digitalarkivet[/url] has census, emigrant lists and much more for Norway, but I think you will find that Ernst Americanized his name. I didn't find any close matches in the 1865 census in Christiana (Oslo). Have you gotten a copy of his and Maries death certificate, that could give you their parents names which would be a big help. Also locating them in the 1900 1910 or 1920 census would give you the year they emigrated and what nationality Marie is. Birth certificates of the children could provide you with more information.
