steamship fares in today's dollars
danfishI have a copy of the KONTRAKT under which my g-grandfather and his family sailed from Christiansand to the U.S. aboard the Cunard Line's SS Ivernia, apparently departing Christiansand Dec. 5, 1902. The total fare for five persons -- my g-grandparents and three children, ages 7, 4, and 9 months -- is listed as 704.5 kroner. I assume from what I can find out about fares at the time that this would be for steerage. Can anyone advise me as to what this total fare would be in either current kroner or current U.S. dollars? Also, any other information or suggestions as to how I might learn more about the sailing time of this vessel, its specific destination, and its arrival would be very helpful. If I understand the contract correctly, they left Christiansand on 5 December, travelling first to Hull, then to Liverpool, and then on to the U.S. -- either Boston or New York, I assume. I have found an SS Ivernia arrival in New York on 11 Jan., 1903, but the implied travel time seems overly long given what I understand were usually 6 or 7 day transatlantic voyage times of the era. Thank you for any help, and if there is any interest in my further research on the family, I'm happy to share what I know. My g-grandfather was Aslak Olsen Raamundalen on the ticket. His wife was Margit and their children Olaf, Sigrid, and Osmund. Aslak adopted the family name of Kallaak in the United States. His wife was known as Margit Overbo.

Jo Anne SadlerAslak olea Raamundalen and family arrived at the Port of Boston on the SS Ivernia on December 19, 1902. Left Liverpool on December 9, 1902. He is listed as a carpenter, going to Fessender (?), ND to brother-in-law, Jorgen Bryngaleson. Also traveling with them was Talleir Raamundalen, 25, schumaker, also going to ND. Hard to read. There is information and a picture of the Ivernia on this site.
