| ccolburn | I'm just beginning the search for my Norwegian ancestors. I have information on my family in the U.S. dating back to the late 1800's (their name was Berg), but am seeking information about my great-great grandfather. He was called Arnt Berg, and family lore has it that he came from Bergen. In the U.S. the family lived in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Any suggestions (or encouragement) for this beginner would be much appreciated. |

The [url="http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp"]LDS Familysearch[/url] also has a lot of information.
Read some of the articles here on this site and also check out the links to other sites. Click on the links below. Norwegian naming practices weren't the same as we are used to now so reading up on it will help.

Since my post of yesterday, I've discovered (through an aunt) the following pieces of information:
Arnt Berg (my great-great-grandfather) was from Storm, Norway; no birthdate known, but he died in USA on 2/5/1895.
Arnt married Gina (or Dina) Elisansen on 6/1/1871 in Norway; she was from Bodo, born 9/13/1850, died 2/13/1917 in USA.
They had 10 (!) children, 4 of whom were born in Norway: Anna (born 3/19/1872); Elina (2/19/1874); Hakon (9/27/1875); and Andrew (my great-grandfather, born 9/24/1879).
It is believed they immigrated as a family, sometime between 9/24/1879 and 1882.
Where do I go from here? I realize these names/spellings are approximate at best. My goal is to make contact, if possible, with descendants of the Berg and Elisansen families who might still be in Norway. I'm going to revisit the LDS Family Search site with this new information. At any rate, THANK YOU for your quick replies to my query.

| ccolburn | Thank you!! Reading these emigration and census records has been one of the more moving experiences of my life. I've also spent time (on website provided by Carla) reading about the situation in Norway, the Crossing, the arrival in USA, etc. This is proving to be an amazing undertaking. How might I proceed from this point in finding any descendants who might still be in Norway?

- Berith Hendriksdatter, born ca. 1807, Størens Prestegjeld.
Arnt Bergs wife was Dina Olausdatter. Her parents was:[url="http://129.177.171.80/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61843.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=517&fulle=true&spraak=e"]click here[/url] - Olaus, dead before census-1865.
- Kristiane Hansdatter, born ca. 1819 in Bodø Prestegjeld (Bodø parish), Nordland county.
I guess you must look for siblings of Arnt or Dina. From the 1865 census, I would guess that Hendrik Arntsen, the owner of the farm, is Arnt Bergs brother. Hendrik is married to Ragnhild, and they have a son called Anders, born ca 1865... [:)] Locate him in the 1900 census!
And Dina has at least 3 sisters, according to the 1865 census. You should try to locate them in the 1900 census. If they're married, their lastname might have changed. She is married to one L. Engen, and they have 10 kids!!! [:)] Maybe a family contest between the sisters....?? [8D]

| ccolburn | Thank you again! I've forwarded these various websites to my two aunts in the US, who are the great-grandchildren of Arnt and Dina Berg. They will be thrilled to have this information...it will mean so much to them! A couple more questions...I don't understand where the name "Berg" came from. Was it a farm name? Also I'm having trouble translating some of the Norwegian words from the records. Is there a good Norwegian dictionary online that I might refer to? Thank you again! This continues to be so exciting!

| Brining | Hi Carrie, Yes Berg came from the farm they lived on. More than one unrelated families could live on a farm so if a person used the name Berg it doesn't mean they are related. Also there is more than one farm named Berg. Makes tracing ancestors interesting[:D]
