I am constructing a family tree, and I have managed to trace my name, KERMEEN, back to the year 1511, where the name appears in its old form in the Isle of Man Manorial Roll. The old form of the name is McURMEN. An even older form of this name must be URMEN, because Mc in front of a surname in this part of the world means "son of" hence McURMEN is "son of URMEN." An entry in a book of 1839 states that the name URMEN came from the Scandinavian name HROSNUNDR. However, I think that this may be a mistake by the author, who may have wrongly translated from the old Futhork letters.
Can anyone help me -
(1) Is there any name from Norway that is similar to URMEN or HROSNUNDR ? It might not even be Norwegian, but from Sweden, Danmark or Finland. If these names appear online, could you tell me the web site.
(2) Do you know of any genealogy websites online which try to trace names from the Viking settlers, who are supposed to have settled in the Isle of Man in the 9th Century (800 AD to 900 AD.)
I know this is a long shot, but I had to try!
