Tørris Johan
danorskeHi, I'm just about at my whit's end. I've been searching for a couple of years now and can't find my grandfather. Here he is leaving Norway on April 7, 1892, http://snurl.com/3bvw If anyone can send me in the right direction I'd be forever greatful. Thanks so much. Ron
Jo Anne SadlerExactly what are you trying to find out? Family in Norway? Family in U.S.? Where did he settle, who did he marry? Do you have his Death Certificate, Naturalization Papers, census, etc.? Where have you been searching[?]
jwiborgGood question! [:)] If you're looking for his parents; this might be his father: Tørris Olsen He lives on the farm Gjerde in Etne parish, which is next to Kvinnherad. thelebrityYou will probably find Tøris and his family in the 1875 census. This census is not yet computerized for Etne parish. But if you get someone to do a lookup for you, they will find the Gjerde farm, and its many sub farms here: http://129.177.171.80/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=REG75H&variabel=0&postnr=2621&fulle=true&spraak=n I would suggest you made a query for the Digitalarkivet query forum: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebDebatt.exe?slag=listtema&debatt=brukar&spraak=e I'm almost certain you will get help to solve your Tørris problem.
danorskeHi and thanks for your answers.I am very sorry, I thought you guys could all read my mind.[:I] I guess I didn't relay what I was looking for. I know all his anscestors, What I'm looking for is the name of the ship that he came to America on. Then I feel if I have that I would be able to find him on the Elis Island website. I do have his naturalization, birth, death cert. ceneus ect. and none of them tell me which ship he came on or even if he went through NY. I'm looking to find him on some passenger list some place. I hope this is enough info. Thanks again i advance. Ron[:I][:I]
Jo Anne SadlerIf you already haven't done so, since you know his exact date of departure, I recommend you research the indexes on this site - Emigrant Ship Arrivals, Agents & Shipping Lines, Index of Arrivals to determine what shipping agents and lines were in Bergen in 1892, names of ships leaving around that time and their final ports of arrival. This might give you some leads. After that, recommend you rent the passenger films at a local Family History Center starting with New York, then Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Quebec. Since you know the exact date it shouldn't take very long to search. Philadelphia, Boston & Baltimore should have indexes for 1892. He still may have come in through New York but names being what they were, who knows how he was listed on the passenger manifest. Also, April 7th might have been the date he registered to leave, not departed. Good luck[:)]
Jo Anne SadlerHi - meant Index of Norwegian Departures 1825-1925 not Emigrant Arrivals[:0]
