Empress of Britain
NancyCWe are looking for passenger lists for the ship Empress of Britain (CPR), sailing from Liverpool in March, 1909. From the information elsewhere on this Website, we assume that the boat docked at Montreal or St. John, NB. The person we are looking for is Alida Brynla Andersdotter Helland, born at Helland Farm, Sand, Rogaland, Norway, in 1887. We have a postcard that she sent from Liverpool on March 11, 1909. I have searched her name on all the databases I could find on this site and Ancestry.com without success. We are not sure what name she used after leaving Norway, so finding a passenger list for this ship would be a big help! Thanks for any information.
BriningHi I did find some information. Using the Google search engine I found this. "Visitation will be from 5 to 9 pm today at Parkway Funeral Service. Anna Belle, the daughter of Christian and Alida (Helland) Iverson, was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Mercer County on the original Iverson homestead" It is from the Bismarck North Dakota Tribune. Frustrating since I can't get to the actual article but I'll keep trying. The date was Oct 10 2002. I did find her on the Stavanger Emigrant list Click Here Carla
BriningHi I found the obiturary. I can't link to it so here it is City Bismarck State ND Anna Belle Easton, 90, Bismarck, died Oct. 7, 2002, at an Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. MDT Wednesday in Beulah City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Parkway Funeral Service. Anna Belle, the daughter of Christian and Alida (Helland) Iverson, was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Mercer County on the original Iverson homestead. Later the family purchased and moved to a farm just north of Beulah. She received her early education in Beulah schools, graduating from Model High School located on the Dickinson State campus. She continued her education at Dickinson State College and received her bachelor of science in elementary education. Following this she taught in schools at Killdeer, Beulah and Zap. On Aug. 3, 1940, she married Robert W. Easton in Beulah. They resided in Beulah until he retired as superintendent of Knife River Coal Company. Anna Belle and Robert then moved to Bismarck. Robert died June 9, 1982, and she continued to live in her home in Bismarck until present time. Anna Belle was active in the Beulah Woman's Club and Zion Lutheran Church, where she served as secretary. She served as librarian for the Beulah City Library and was a member of Homemakers Clubs in both Beulah and Bismarck. Her church activities continued as an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She is survived by a brother, Otto, Milwaukee, Wis.; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends and caregivers. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers; and one sister. Carla
NancyCGetting the obituary above was a big help. We have tracked down Anna Belle Iverson Easton's first cousin in Oregon. However, she is elderly and the names of her first cousins in North Dakota didn't seem to mean anything, so this discovery has not helped us find descendants of Alida Iverson. From the obituary for Anna Belle Iverson Easton we see that the youngest child, Otto Iverson, probably born after the 1930 census (kindly provided by Anne Sadler elsewhere), was still living in Milwaukee, WI in Oct. 2002. Both I and my sons in the US have tried in vain to find him. If anyone has any ideas how we might find Otto Iverson, we would appreciated it. Nancy
James E HegYou might try going to <Ancestory.com>. I gave it a try and got about 50 or 60 possibilities for Otto Iverson. In some cases you have to to be a subscriber to one or other of their services, but there is a lot of "free" stuff to look at.
James E HegAt Ancestory.com you might try the 1994 and 2002 phone and address directories. There are Iver Iversons in North Dakota and Washington.
GhiaIn the 1930 census, Alida is listed as Elida. (She lives in Township 144, Mercer ND with husband Christian and children Annabelle, Ivan, Vida, Norman and Loyd). There is an Otto Iversen in the 1930 census, who is listed as being born in Norway 1976. He lives in Wauwatosa, Milwaukee WIS with wife Anna and children Tyra, Arthur & Florence. Clearly not the Otto in the obituary, but maybe his family ? There are 2 more Iverson families living in the same place, with heads listed as being born in Norway. Alida travels from Stavanger on March 8 1909 (probably on the S/S Salmo). She seems to be in the company of a Inga Helland born 1892....a relative ? The Empress of Britain sails from Liverpool on March 12, bound for St. John, where she arrives on March 20. As far as I know, the passenger lists are not available online. They are on Microfilm at the National Archives of Canada, in Ottawa (NAC). The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of arrival. You can borrow this reel (T-4820) on an Inter Library Loan (ILL). You can find the details for this procedure at this URL : http://www.archives.ca/www/Genealogy.html
NancyCThank you so much! This is a big help.
