| NancyC | We are looking for Alida Andersdotter Helland Iverson, and any descendants. Alida Andersdotter was born at Helland Farm, Sand, Rogaland, Norway, in 1887. Her parents were Anders Anderssen Helland (1845-1915) and Valborg Kristensdotter Ulladalen or Ytre Vanvik (1862-1949). Alida emigrated in 1909, eventually traveling from Liverpool on Empress of Britain about March 11, 1909. She married her cousin, Christian Mathew Iverson of Browntown, WI. They supposedly ran a farm in Beulah, ND. We have photographs of people we think are several of their children, some with spouses and children, but no names. We think they must have migrated to Oregon, perhaps to Salem and Newport, as the photos were taken there. Christian Mathew Iverson's parents were Anna Andersdotter Helland (1841-1843). who emigrated in 1861 and came to Wiota, WI, and Iver Iverson (born in Norway as Alexander Iver Stordahl). They ran a farm in Browntown, WI. We think that Alida and her sister Anna, born in 1882 and emigrated to the US in 1902, lived in Ottawa, IL for a time. We have several photos taken there, and we think they are of Anna and Alida. Anna was married twice, first to a man named Bell, with whom she had a daughter, Caroline, and then to Barber McMahan (or Machon). She also is supposed to have lived in North Dakota. | NancyC | Thank you for your help! We have now tracked down the family of Anna Andersdotter Helland. As it turns out, this was the family that left Dakota (South) for Oregon. Anna A. Helland was first married to a man named Barber, not Bell. He was killed in a tragic accident in an elevator shaft in Chicago, sometime before their daughter Caroline was born. Subsequently, Anna married a man named McMahon and had 4 more children. The youngest daughter is still living, and we have now spoken with her and learned much more about this branch of the family!
However, the children of Anna have had little contact with their first cousins in North Dakota. Anne Sadler found the obituary for Anna Belle Iverson Easton, and we see that the youngest child, Otto Iverson, probably born after the 1930 census (kindly provided by Anne Sadler above), was still living in Milwaukee, WI in Oct. 2002. Both I and my sons in the US have tried in vain to find him. If anyone has any ideas how we might find him, we would appreciated it. The obituary is under my question on the ship Empress of Britain. |
