Transportation in 1883
Anozira	From Surnadal there are two different ports my gr grandfather could have sailed from in 1883. From Surnadal to Trondheim it looks like travel would have been mostly over land. From Surnadal to Kristiansund it looks like travel would have been more by boat. Which one would have been the most logical port for him to have traveled to in 1883? Archives in Trondheim show he purchased a contract 23 May 1883 to sail from Surendal to Michigan. But "Emmigrants from Kristiansund (1882-1930)" has his date of departure listed as 23 May 1883. Anozira	"Emigrants from Kristiansund 1882-1930 " was found on Digitalarkivet and the Trondheim information was from a letter written to my father in 1985. I am looking for where my gr grandfather Lars R. Sogge departed from.
thelebrity	If he is listed in the Kristiansund records I would think he left from Kristiansund. Although it would be easier to say something for sure if you gave us the name of your ancestor - and maybe even the linksto the Trondheim and Kristiansund records where he appears.
thelebrity	I think you can be pretty sure he departed from Kristiansund as he is listed in the Kristiansund emigrant records - which by the way states that he hasn't bought a ticket in advance (from what I can understand - under the column "ticket" it says "no"). But the ship he sailed on might have started it's voyage from Trondheim, and also entered Bergen before going to England.
thelebrity	The Kristiansund records states that Lars was going with a white star line ship from England. Could it be possible that the feeder ship he entered in Kristiansund went from Kristiansund to Trondheim, and that he was able to sign a contract in Trondheim later on the same day that he left Kristiansund. thelebrity	The Wilson line feeder ship "Tasso" left Trondheim on may 24. 1883, entering Christiansund and Aalesund before going to Hull, England. he first corresponding White Star ship was the SS Republic" that left Liverpool, and arrived in Nerw York with 500 scandinavian passengers on june 8. 1883. The records of this site states that the Republic also left Liverpool on june 8., but that is probably wrong. I think you will find Lars on board the Republic.
