maggiDear Ferryl, Found a possible family for Brita. However all details will have to be checked with original church records to see if they indeed are the correct family! A Britha Johannesdatter was born in Sogndal 23rd April 1828 and baptized the 27th April. Parents were Johannes Amundsen and Martha Anfindsdatter. (NB! Norwegian naming patterns at that time usually gave the patronymicon - father's name- as surname with the appendage "søn" or "sen " for a son and "datter " for a daughter. The names Barsnæss and Høstager would be farm names. The couple also had the following children: Margrethe chr. 11.jul. 1830, Anders chr. 16 aug 1835, Anfind chr. 25 mar 1838, Mari chr. 9 aug 1840, Aamund chr 25 may 1843 and Hans chr. 23 may 1847. Johannes Aamundsen + Martha Anfindsdatter were married on 20th March 1828 in Sogndal. His father was Aamund Anderssen, and her father Anfind Andfindsen. There were no censuses between 1801 and 1865 after Brita left, so I checked the 1801 censuses for the farms, both in Sogndal. Amongst other farm people on Barsnæss were Anders Aamundsen , farmer, aged 57 , his wife (both in their first marriage) Mari Nielsdtr , aged 60 , and their sons Niels Andersen aged 29 , unmarried and crippled, and Aamund Andersen aged 25 . Living at Høstager, I found Anfind Anfindsen farmer aged 30 (second marriage) with his wife Britha Nielsdatter aged 26 (her first marriage) , his son from his first marriage Hans Anfindsen aged 3 , and their son Niels Anfindsen aged 1. There was a Knut Thorkildsen, farmer aged 39, on the farm Grøt in Sogndal with wife and children in the 1865 census. However, I've no idea whether he was father to Amund. Family Search Internett has a database called Ancestral File, I found Anfind Anfindsen there with both marriages, his first wife died a few weeks after giving birth to twins. Submitter's name is WILLIAM REED BLEAK, 2371 E 2100 S , SALT LAKE CITY UT , USA 84109-1369 . Submission reference : AF96-106881 And Pedigree Resource File has the same family sent in by : Robert Lane MERRILL , PO Box 206 2245 West 7200 North Honeyville, Utah 84314-0206 IGI has the following children for Anfind Anfindsen + Brita Nilsen: Anna chr. 5/10/1802, twins Guri and Synneve bapt. 15 nov 1806 , Niels chr. 25 dec 1800, Anfind chr. 2 feb 1812, Ole chr. 7 jun 1818 and Britha chr. 3 sep 1815. Some of the baptisms seem to be registered in two parishes. All should be checked with original records. If you have a branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with a family history centre near you, you'll be able to get the details from Pedigree Resource File cd's, and order the necessary microfilms. Good luck and best wishes from snowy Norway. Margaret Strand.
maggiHad an e-mail via Norway Heritage asking me about Knut Thorkildsen from the farm "Grøt", and unfortunately deleted it before I'd replied, so am posting this reply here. I have no personal knowledge of this area or these families, searched Digitalarkivet (Norwegian censuses) and Family Search for the info above. However I know that there are several "bygdebøker" from the Sogn + Fjordane county with extensive genealogies of some of the farms. Try <www.sf.disnorge.no> (an organisation for the use of computers in genealogy, Sogn county branch) and see if they can help you or give you the addresses of Family History Societies in the area who could help you. According to Fam.Search Knut married Gjertrud Pedersdatter 30th July 1855, and the 1865 census finds the couple on the farm Grøt with three children, Ole, Peder and Jens. His only qualification for possibly being the father of the aforementioned illegitimate child is the fact that he was the only person with that name in the area at the right time. The father could be him, but might just as well be somebody else who visited or moved away or even died. You should check the birth record of Amund Knutson and see if the priest noted where the father was from or any other detail which would help identify him - were there any witnesses/godparents from the farm Grøt, for example?
