passengers on 1884 Heimdal
dennygeneral info on Heimdal 1884 Christiania Mar. 26 (departs) New York Apr. 13 (arrives) Digitalarkivet: Emigrants from Kristiansand 1873-1930 6094 Kristiansand 172 1884 Mars 24 Johan Friis m U Salmager 0 28 Stavanger Thingvalla Lin [?] Why is he on ship 2 days early? Where is his wife? Is there a complete passenger list for this ship? He is listed as "unmarried" here, but listed as "married" on the emmigrants from Stavanger of this same year. Looking for information on where Emeli Reiersd Høgelie b. 1850 (of Stavanger) emmigrated also. If not on this ship, what would be the next best guess for an immigration from Stavanger during the 1884 1885 time frame? The US 1900 census has 1884 as her emmigration date. She may have immigrated with one son, Thorval. We've hit a roadblock trying to connect the Friis & Høgelie names and could really use some help peicing this together.
James E HegI found Johan Friis, age 28, sailmaker in the 1884 HEIMDAL List for a 14 April 1884 arrival New York from Christiana and Christiansand Norway. There were 153 Norwegians on board. Perhaps I can find his wife if you present more information. Wives tend to be listed under their patronym and/or farm name. Usually not their husband's patronym. Regards Jim
BriningHi The emigrant list from Stavanger is a reconstructed list from many different sources so it depends on the accuracy of the source. The originals were destroyed in a fire. Emeli could have left from Stavanger and just not be listed. Your best bet for finding information is through the microfilmed records at the LDS. They have the 1875 census and some church records. Not an easy task since there is more than one church. Here is a list of the records they have Click Here Where did they live in the US? There might be an early state census that lists them. Carla
dennyJohan Friis' wife should be a Emeli Reiersd Høgelie b. 1850 She appears on the 1865 telling at this link w/ her parents and siblings at 8c Rode Stavanger http://129.177.171.80/cgi-win/webcens.exe? slag=visbase&filnamn=f61103.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=10275&fulle=true&sp raak=n I'm guessing she may be listed under "Reiersdater" ? since dad is Reier Ols. Høgelie Emeli, at least, lived in NY. We have her on the 1900 census with her 2nd husband (Reinert Peter Hanson). According to the census information, they marriied about 1885 or 1886. The family pronunciation stateside of Emeli is "Amelia" and she was buried by that name. We have no clue what happened to Johan Friis and can not even confirm that he made it to the US, since we can find no record of him here. Is the information you have from boarding or disembarking list? that information may add another piece to the puzzle. We know of hom boarding from the "Digitalarkivet: Emigrants from Kristiansand 1873-1930", but have not been able to find an actual ships list record anywhere. Emeli may have also came with her brothers Rigkard Reiers. or Einar Reiers. - we knew of their names, but didn't know of her sisters until finding them on the census. Also, any clue on phonetic pronunciation of "Høgelie" - name doesn't seem to exist in the US, so I'm betting we have the pronunciation messed up enough that we aren't recognising another spelling as the same name. Thank you for all your help, denny
