Sliepner 1862 Bergen-Chicago
Tami_jenson	Hello, This voyage carried a group of religious dessenters from Troms Norway to Chicago, they later settled in an area of Kandiyohi county, Minnisota. I have a web site for Genealogy research in Troms Norway and would like to publish the passenger list for this voyage on my site since so many were from Troms. Jo Anne Sadler	This is very interesting, I would not have thought that there were any ships sailing directly from Norway to Chicago. On the Index of Departures on this site, there is the Bark Sleipner with several voyages on this route. One voyage only has 30 passengers and another 109 so it was a small vessel. It would seem that they sailed through the St. Lawrence River to Chicago through the Great Lakes and various canals. There are no Chicago passenger lists at LDS or the National Archives. Then, as now, one goes through customs at the first point of entry into the United States. They also might have surrendered the passenger list in Canada. My only advice is to research the voyage and rent passenger list microfilms for places along the route, Canada and US. Good luck[:)]
Jo Anne Sadler	Do you have some names of passengers on this voyage? You might get help from people with subscriptions to passenger list databases. Another suggestion is to do newspaper research. The Chicago Historical Society has Chicago newspaper archives. http://www.chicagohs.org/collections/genealogy.html They may be a mention in a Chicago paper around the date of arrival, sometimes listing names of passengers or an account of the voyage if it was unusual.
