Peter Martin Herstad
cecemooreHi! :-) I am new and am trying to find info on my gggrandfather Peter Martin Herstad b. abt 1838 in Trondheim or Stjordalen, Norway and buried near Stjordalen in the Vaerdal Churchyard. He married Sofie Christiane Einersen on 7/2/1867 and had 4 children-Aksel, Fredrikka, Petra and Anna. I have found some info on the 1865 and 1900 censuses, but still can't track down his parents. Our family writings say that his father was a "standard bearer for the King" and his mother was a "Danish Baroness." I would like to find out if this is true. Can anyone help? It would be much appreciated!
askeroiI can't answere your question about his parents, but I assume his name comes from the farm Herstad in Wiggen, Bynes, Trondheim. It doesn't sound very likely that a danish baroness should end up on this farm (but strange things do happen now and then...). It's though more likely that his father could have been a "standard bearer for the king", as this probably only means he was a soldier, one responsible for "waving" the portable flag/standard. There are also other farms called Herstad, but they're in other parts of the country. Here's "yours" (I think) in the 1801 cencus: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f11655.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=1781&fulle=true&spraak=n To find his parents I'm afraid you'll have to look at the church book for this parish. where the following lived in 1801 http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f11655.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=1781&fulle=true&spraak=n If
askeroiSorry about the last part and the link comming twice. I though I had deleted it...
BriningHi In the LDS there is a record for a Peter Martin Herstad born in 1838 with parents Peder HERSTAD Mother: Maria KNUDSDR HERSTAD Click Here Also there are two other children born to them 1. Peter Martin HERSTAD - Vital Records Index Gender: M Birth/Christening: 07 Sep 1833 Trondheim, Sor-Trondelag, Norway He probably died before your Peter was born. It also wasn't unheard of to have two children with the same name. 2. Indian Bernhard HERSTAD - Vital Records Index Gender: M Birth/Christening: 02 Mar 1835 Trondheim, Sor-Trondelag, Norway This one is speculation but there is a Peter Herstad in a 2nd marriage in 1842 Click Here maybe it is Peter Martin's father. You would have to view the micro film to see if there is a connection. They are on the 1865 census Here Good Luck Carla

jwiborgHi, I think the one Carla found in her posting is the correct one. His father is listed as Peder Herstad, born approx 1791 (according to census-1865). This must be him in census-1801 His name is then Peder Jonssen, and he lives on the farm "Herstad Neder" ("lower Herstad") in Inderøy, Nord-Trøndelag... [:)] His father Jon Pedersen is in his second marriage, so his wife Ane Jacobsdtr is not Peders mother. Here is Peder's birth record. I believe the mother Gunnille Halvorsdatter must have died 1792-1795, because Ane is not the mother to Haldo (2nd link) born 1792, but she is the mother to Gunnil born 1795. Gunnil is thus named after Jon's first wife. Jan
cecemooreWOW! You guys are amazing! I just checked back not expecting anything and you guys have got it all figured out for me already. Thanks so much everyone!!! [:D] In the 1801 census, there is a Peder Jonssen age 79 and Agatha Hanssdtr age 67 listed after my Peder and Jon. Can anyone read the notes and tell me what they say? Are these Peder Jonssen's (Herstad) grandparents by chance? Thanks again!
jwiborgHi, Peder Jonssen (79 years old) are Jon Pedersen's father! [:)] The census says that Peder and wife lives on benefits derived from a surrendered property, ie. they owned the farm before their son Jon Pedersen took over. Agatha Hanssdatter is Peder's second wife, so I don't think she is Jon Pedersen's mother... Jon and Hans are thus half brothers.
