Ragnhild dau of Guri Ellingsen Ole Olsen Flaa Hal
odc5Ragnhild born July 10, 1870 in Flaa Hallingdal to parents Guri Ellingsen and Ole Olsen. She had a brother by the name of Elling Olsen. Father Ole died when Ragnhild and Elling were young (1870's). It is said that Ole was a fisherman and drowned at sea. Not sure about this as Flaa is inland. Any comments? Family records state that Ragnhild immigrated to the US when she was 12. She traveled with an uncle to Wisconsin. I found (in Digitalarkivet) a Ragnhild Olsen (age 12) and an Ole Larsen (age 60) traveling on the ship called Angelo in 1884 (October 17). However this would make Ranghild birth in the year 1872 rather than 1870. I have a copy of Ragnhild's marriage certificate from Wisconsin and it states that her parents names were Ole Olsen and Guri Ellingsen. Ragnhild's brother, Elling, did not immigrate. I also have a picture of a Elling and his family taken in front of a "Hotel Brumunddalen" that I presume is in the town of Brumunddal near Hamar. My problem is that I cannot find any solid leads in Norway. I have searched the 1865 & 1875 census records for this family as well as the 1900 census records for Elling Olsen but no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you very much - Dan Olsen
askeroiWonder if you're mixing up a bit here. Hallingdal is in Buskerud as far as I know. The Ragnhild emmigrating in 1884 is born in Nord-Aurdal in Oppland, which is pretty far from Hallingdal. And the uncle(?) Ole Larsen is born in Nannestad, Akershus - which is pretty far from both Buskerud and Oppland (though in between). And Nord-Aurdal and Nannestad is inland - probably not many fishermen there? There's no couple Ole Olsen / Guri Ellingsdatter in the cencus from 1865, but they could very well be married later as Ragnhild was born in 1870. Unfortunately the 1875 cencus for Buskerud is not online. You don't have an estimated birth year of her brother Elling?
Jo Anne SadlerThe ship Angelo was a feeder ship operated by the Wilson Line to take passengers to Hull, England. From Hull, a train to Liverpool or Glascow and sometimes Southhampton to board ships to their final destinations. Ragnild Olsen, age 12 and Ole Larsen, age 60 arrived at the Port of New York on November 8, 1884 from Glascow, Scotland aboard the Circassia operated by the Allan Line. Ole was listed as a farmer from Norway and no occupation listed for Ragnild. Final destination U.S. Ragnild's passenger # was 173 and Ole's 176. #174 was an Anne Olsen, age 20 and #175 Bertha Olsdatter, age 55. The list was not in alphabetical order and single men and women were berthed in separate areas of the ship. This was a late in the season trip and there were only 217 passengers, very few Norwegians. The Circassia had a passenger capacity of over a 1000. They would have been processed for immigration into this country at the Castle Garden (Clinton) Immigration Processing Center at the tip of Battery Park. There are several good articles on this site about Hull. You can rent the passenger list microfilm for this voyage from a local family history center. Picture of the Circassia. Would recommend double checking the information. http://smithhomepage.homestead.com/files/ellis.HTM
ninakarlsStart with what you have, shortcuts are probably not available here. You need to verify Ragnhild's birth (July 10, 1870 in Flaa Hallingdal?), maybe the birth of her brother as well. A microfilm with the church records should be available from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The record will show where the parents lived. (After doing this, you could try to contact Terje Østro, N-3550 Gol, snail-mail only. He is presently working on a "bygdebok" for the Flaa area. ) Good luck!
