From Norway to the US in 1886
reeftankI am looking for a Hans Hilton, who came to the US from Norway in 1886, he was born February 1866 in Bergen. Any help would be appreciated
askeroiThere are no Hilton's in Bergen neither in the 1865 nor 1875 cencus'. The persons carrying this name are living in Ullensaker and the Oslo area. But if your birth information is right: There are only one HANS born in Bergen in february 1866 - on the 24th: the son of Hans Guttormsen Haukeland and his wife Berthe Mikkelsdatter. Maybe Haukeland was too difficult to pronaunce in english and was changed to Hilton? Everything is possible - but it doesn't sound very likely to me. There are no suitable Hans' emigrating from Bergen in 1886. Are you sure about the Bergen connection?? Or do you have any additional information?
reeftankSorry must have been sleeping when I typed that one. he came to the US around 1860 and was born in 1846. Do not know the exact location he came from in Norway but it is believed to be Bergen. Again sorry for the mistake has been a long day.
reeftanklet me try this again. He was born in February 1866 and migrated to the US in 1888. Sorry again
reeftankit is believed that he was married to a Anna Marie (Johanson or Johnson) born in 1866 and had a sun Henry H who was born in 1888 in Norway. The only other info that I have is scetchy at best, is that he came from bergen and his wife may have been from lapland?
askeroiMaria Hilton (22) and Henry Hilton (2 1/2 (?)) left OSLO october 11th 1888: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&variabel=0&postnr=76431&fulle=true&spraak=n And a second time Marie (27) and this time a daughter called Lilly (11/12 year [11 months? or miswriting for 1 1/2??]. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&variabel=0&postnr=99685&fulle=true&spraak=n But I can't find no trace of any Hans Hilton, neither in Oslo nor Bergen. But there is only one farm called Hilton in Norway - and it's situated in Ullensaker in Akershus north of Oslo. I would think the name comes from that farm. There are no Hans's fitting too well in the 1875 cencus (the closest being Hans Jacob Olsen born 1862 in Ullensaker) - but this birth year could be wrong as he's not listed on Hilton in 1865... I'm working on it...
thelebrityJust an idea: If your family history suggests that Maria was from Lappland, maybe her surname originally was Hildonen. It is a finnish name also common in Troms and Finnmark due to finnish and kvenish migration from northern Finland to northern Norway. I can't find any Hildonen in the Oslo/Kristiania emigration lists, but her name could have been norwegianized. The emigration list claims she was living in Oslo when she left for America. I should be possible to trace Maria/Marie Hilton (Hildonen?) in adress books nd/or censuses in Oslo.
reeftankHer maiden name we believe was Johanson or Johnson, her mother lived with them and her name was Karen B. Johanson who was born around 1842. Marie and Hans were married in Norway but do not know the date. There is also a Karel Knuden listed as mother-in-law born April 1841, who also migrated in 1888. The Karen B. Johanson that I mentioned earlier came over in 1987 she was 68 in the 1910 US Census.
reeftankForget Henry Was there son and was born in Norway, Lilly was there daughter and was born in the US
reeftankAlso my mother just told me that she believes Hans Hilton was a cabin boy. cound that expain him not being on the ship register
reeftankHans and Anna Maria were married around some time around 1887 with Henry being their son
BriningI think the Hans Jacob Olsen Askeroi found is him. Here is a marriage record for Hans Jacob Olsen Hilthon and Anne Marie Johannesen at the LDS Click Here Carla
reeftankThank you so much for your help. My mother and aunt are estatic that something was found. Now I just have to find when Hans came to the United States. Again, Thank you so much for your help
askeroiThere's only one Karen B... Jo...datter aged 22-24 in the 1865 cencus. She's the daughter on a farm in Troms, far north in Norway - and this suits fine to the lap story. But of course... http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f61917.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=5243&fulle=true&spraak=n
reeftankAgain I thank you for your help, but have a question, have read some on naming conventions in norway and am still having trouble. If Ole Jensen was Hans Jacob Olsen Hilthon. How would I find Hans in the norway census. I think Forenamn is first name, and Etternavn is second name, and Fodselsar is birth year. can you tell me if this if corrent. and where did the name Hans Jacon Olsen hilthon get from Ole Jensen or is Julius Olsen his father.
thelebrityOle Jensen could not have been Hans Jacob Olsen Hilthon. Ole would have had to be Hans Jacob's father. Olsen meaning "Ole's son". Julius Olsen in this case could have been Hans Jacob's brother (I haven't gone into this material, so I don't know if you are using these names as examples or if they are real persons). Hilthon/Hilton is a farm name, and I would guess that the best way to find your guy is to search for the farm (and the nearby area) in the censuses. Your translations are correct.
reeftankThe names Hans Hilton and Anna Marie Hilton are real names the Ole Jenson is listed as Hans father, and Julius Olsen is listed as Anna Maria's father. Again I thank you for all your help. Am not working on find ole Jenson and Julius Olsen. Thanks
reeftankI think I found Anna Marie's parents http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f70301&variabel=0&postnr=70454&fulle=true&spraak=n but I cannot find Hans parents. After looking through the Marraige license, I found that Han's father is Ole Jenssen, and his mother is Ingeborg Marie Ericksdr
BriningHi I believe that this is the birth/christening record for Hans. Click Here in Ostre Aker. Here is the 1865 census record for his parents Click Here. They won't be in the 1875 census since Østre Aker isn't on line. This looks like a pretty good connection but it hard to say for sure. Carla
