Richard O. Melleby (Moe) Norway -US 1886 june/july
BertaHello! I am looking for the following person: 24.06.1886 25.06.1886 Richard Oscar Melby (Moe) Dreng 15 Skeberg To: New York Agent: Blichfeldt Ship: Rollo I think the journy was prepaid. Anyone who has any idea? His Father was: Magnus Zachariassen Melleby and his morther was: Karen Thorine Melleby Berta
HopkinsI'm not sure what you are hoping to find. What idea are you looking for? But there is a Richard A. Melby living in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon USA in the 1910 US census - listed then as 39 years old. In that census he is married to an Anna from Germany with 3 daughters - Cora, Marian and Grace - and one son - Richard. He is the proprietor of a restaurant and notes in that census that he came to the US in 1885?? (hard to read)? That census also notes that his father was Norwegian and his mother Danish. In 1920 the same man, but listed as Richard O. Melby, is found in Los Angeles, California with the same family members. Can't quite read what his occupation is but he is definitely working in another restaurant. In this census he does not say that his mother was from Denmark - but it appears that she was also Norwegian.
Bertawow! Thank you for your help! I see now that I really didn't ask any questions. I guess I couldn't get this much information as you have provided!.. But weren't there any census in 1890? which would be the closest to his arrival in the US? I think you really may have found Richard. And if you could check the 1890-cenus.. well I would really be grafeful for your help! Was he living, when the 1930 census was registred? Berta
HopkinsYes, there was a US federal census in 1890 - but almost every bit of it was destroyed somehow - so no longer available. That 20 years between the 1880 and the 1900 is a great time period to look for state censuses and other possible local records. I don't have access to the 1930 census for the state of California. I will try to look Richard's family up again in those two earlier censuses and see if I can get any hints for you from the listed birthplaces of the children - but that might have to wait several hours - got work to do first.
BriningHi They are recorded in the California Death index. BertaThis is like a box opening, and I am really grateful for the information! I have also searched .. And I found the same. So he died in California, LA. Wonder where he lived. And if there is any living decendants of him. He was the cousin of my great great grandfather. Berta
Bertaby the way.. In the search, there is a column which says: "bp", which I guess is "birthplace". But what does "RE" in this column stand for? Berta
BriningHi "RE" stands for rest or any place they don't have a code for. This site click here has access to a lot more info. Select Las Angeles county. They have city directories and I found the Melby family in 1920 living at 515 Stanford, the restaurant at 419 So Main. Carla
BertaThank you for the tip! I tried also to search the 1930, and I found them.. but it is a bit hard to read. It is on page 01579-00 Berta
HopkinsWhen the family was in Portland, Oregon for the 1910 census it lists that the oldest child, Cora (f-12yrs) was born in Washington. All the younger children born in Oregon Richard is noted as being a naturalized citizen with a year of 1894 - so that event should have taken place in Oregon.
Jo Anne SadlerRegarding your original posting. The ship Rollo was a feeder ship operated by the Wilson Line to transport passengers from Kristiania to Hull, England. From Hull, they were taken by train to Liverpool to board their transatlantic ship. Per the Index of Departures and Agents/Shipping Lines Indexes on this site, in 1886, F.E. Blickfeldt was the agent for the Cunard Lines and would have arranged the passage all the way through to the final destination. I could not find Richard Oscar Melby (Moe) or even Magnussen on the New York Immigratant database on Ancestry.com. There is a good article about the Cunard Line under Shipping Lines, their route was from Liverpool to either New York or Boston.[:)]
BertaAnd the information keeps on coming! Great! I have emailed the library in LA, if they could provide any information on the restaurant. I mean. it could still be in action.. maybe.. Berta
BertaThe naturalisation records.. How do I see them? Is it possible to view them online? And if the naturalisation happened in 1894, it wouldn't then happened in Washington? Since Cora was born in 1898 (1910-12), and she was born in Washington? And thank you for searching for Richard onAncestory.com for me.. But are there records online for arrivals to New York before 1892? Berta
BertaI haven't gotten any answer from the library. I guess they don't answer such requests. Is there anyone, who is living in LA that knows anything about this restaurant, or this family, or can help me to sites where I can find anything about it. How do I procced in finding possible decendants to Richard and his children? I only got the adress for the restaurant or café, how do I find the name, if there was any? Berta
BertaHello everybody! I hope that there may be somone out there who read about this from LA, and maybe is familiar with the places and persons in this topic! Or maybe somone else could help me further. I still haven't got any answers from the library, so I guess they ignore it... Berta
BertaHello again! I don't give up on Richard and his family.. ;) Anyway.. I came up with something.. If I know the date Richard died. , which was 0808 1941 in Los Angeles, according to the California Death Index. Is there possible to find an obituary? Was ther many papers in LA at the time? And maybe same thing for the other members of his family? Anna Melby died i 1938, same place. The last adress of Cora and Richard H. is in r411 S. Humphreys av. LA from the city directory
BertaSince I have found out some more about Richard and his family, I will "update" this: Richard died 8. august 1942, there was an obituary for him (in the LA times, I guess.. ) which ran on aug. 12 1942, for Rev. Richard O. Melby only states services were held at the chapel of W. A. Brown and son, 1815 South Flower St. There is a obituary that ran in the LA Times on Oct 22, 1938 of the death of Anna Louise Melby who was the wife of Richard O. Melby. There is no mention of any children or where she was buried. The notice for Anna Louise Melby only states that she was the wife of Richard O. Melby and that funerla services were held in George Remington's Chapel. Address of 1707 South she died October 19. 1938. Since these obituarys ran in the LA Times, does anyone have access to these? And does anyone know where they most probably is buried? Hopkins! I Keep coming back to the naturalisation record: You said that this happened in 1894, and that it happened in Portland. I have gotten an answer on that Richard was naturalised in 1908: ( see below:) Case# V 1 289 Name Melby, Richard Oscar Date 08-07-1908 Record Type Naturalization/Intention County Clatsop Source County Nativity Identifier Remarks INS Did you write it wrong? And I have found out more about their daughter Marion, which full name is: Marion Agnes Melby (Agnes is after a sister of Richard Oscar), and she was born 3rd August 1901 in the city of Portland: Name MELBY MARIAN AGNES Date 03-08-1901 Record Type Portland Births County Source City of Portland Parents MELBY, RICHARD & ANNA (DIETRICH) Source: Oregon Historical Records Index Detail Information, Portland Birth I got this about Cora: Name: MELBY, CORA M Social Security #: 545621372 Sex: FEMALE Birth Date: 7 Apr 1898 Birthplace: WASHINGTON Death Date: 3 May 1981 Death Place: NAPA Mother's Maiden Name: DEITRCH Father's Surname: (SSDI shows death in Kelseyville, Lake Co., CA.) The only one I don't have any birthinformation on is Grace Melby. She would be born about 1905. Does Anyone have this information? Anna and Richard did have another child, but he or she is dead. Does anyone have acess to Portland, Multnomah church books? As I listed over, Cora M Melby died in 3rd May 1981 in Napa, California. Her residence was Kelsyville, Lake County, California. Does anyone know of any records of obituary of her, or does know if she had any decendants? On MyFamily People Finder I have found a Cora M Melby, but since I have no access to this site, I can't find if this is "my" Cora. Does anyone have access to this: http://reunite.myfamily.com/search.aspx?search=%26lastname%3dMelby And finally: Does anyone has access to what exatly is said about this family in the 1920 census? Their adress is: 515 Stanford Ave LA, CA. I have come so much further in my research for Richard and his family, but there are still some more gaps. All help is gratefully appriciated!! Berta
HopkinsNo, I didn't write it wrong. That's what I read the 1920 census to say for the year of naturalization. That would be on National Archives (U.S.) microfilm Series: T625 Roll: 114 Page: 34 or LDS microfilm # 1820114
BertaHello Hopkins! Ok.. Then I must have gotten it wrong.. But why are you so sure that i happened in Portland? Because Cora, who is the oldest child, she is born in 1898 in Washington, shouldn't it happened there then? Or does it say that it happened in Portland in the census? I am truly sorry for asking this, but it doesn't really say in your answer where you have it from that it happened in Portland. But then I am new at this, so maybe your answer is obvious, in that case, I do appologise. Berta
HopkinsThe census does not list a location for naturalization and I'm not sure. I based my quick guess on the birthplaces and years of the children after only a brief glance. If you have studied it carefully and have a better guess - go with it.
