Nationality Ellen Onstad |
Wally | Hi,
My grandmother, Mathilda Severson, was married 3 times. Her second marriage was to an Ellen Onstad. Would anyone know if he came from Norway?
Wally |
thelebrity | Onstad is a norwegian farm name which is used in several parts of Norway:
farm no farm name parish kommune fylke
43 Onstad Treungen Nissedal Bratsberg
152 Onstad Tranby Lier Buskerud
89 Onstad Aurdal Nordre Aurdal Oppland
35 Onstad Volbu Østre Slidre Oppland
30 Onstad Vangen Aurland Sogn og Fjordane
9 Onstad Askim Askim Østfold
78 Onstad Skiptvet Skiptvet Østfold
But Ellen is a girl's name, and american women still aren't allowed to get married to another woman in the USA (so much for the land of the free...) So I would think the groom's first name must have been misread at some point. Maybe it's Ellef or Esten? |
thelebrity | Eiler(t) is also a possibility... |
Wally | Hi,
On the marriage bit, I have my bias, but I won't indulge it here. However, as I type this I am looking at a divorce decree dated 1907 between an Ellen Onstad and my grandmother. |
ninakarls | In 1865-census we have 98 Ellends, 4 Elands and 4 Ellænds. As far as I can see all male ... Sounds Norwegian (or Norwegian decent) to me! Does he have a known birth year?
21.09.1882 10 year old Elling Onstad of Ådalen leaves Oslo, destination: Albert Lea |
Wally | Ninakarls,
To answer your question, not really. However I know my grandmother was a little over 5 years when the Severson family left Norway in 1881.
Wally |
ninakarls | Fair enough, so this Elling Onstad could be a possibility. Transciption of handwriting isn't easy. |
Brining | Hi There is a possibility in the 1910 census for the Elling that Nina found
OHNSTAD E H 41 M W NORW MN POLK HILL RVR TWP 1910 emigrated 1882
E H may be the initials for Elling Henriksen. Henrik Onstad appears to be the father on the emigrant list
He is in his 2nd marriage, married 5 years and has a 10 year old son born in Dakota so if this is the correct Elling it is probably not the one Wally is looking for.
The name Elling sure sounds like a good possibilty for Ellen.

Wally | Hi,
This Ellen Onstad or Elling Ohnstad would had married my grandmother Mathilda Iverson shortly after the death of her first husband in 1901. They were married either in Iowa or North Dakota. They got divorced in North Dakota in 1907. There were no children born to this union. |
Brining | In North Dakota I found two possibilities
In the Naturaliztion index
Ohnstad, Ellend 1st papers issued in Bottineau county May 28, 1887
and in the 1920 census
OHNSTAD ELLING 48 M W NORW ND WALSH KINLOSS
Married immigrated 1882 |
Wally | Hi,
I would like to update this post. I have found that an Allen J. Ohnstad married my grandmother, the former Mathilda Iverson, on Dec. 1 1904 in Owatonna, Minnesota.
Wittnesses were Peter Ellingson and Ella M. Eggleston.
That brings one last question: Was the male wittnesses, the same Simon Peter Ellingson who married my grandmother's half sister? |
Hopkins | It would probably make good sense for you check records in the area of Owatonna Minnesota to answer that question. I just don't think passenger lists will help. |
Wally | Hopkins,
This is probably beating a dead horse. However, my last statement above can be taken as truth. However, in 1907, when they got divorced, he went by a variety of derivations of that name. How common is that? |
Wally | Hi, I was wondering if anyone know what happened to this Allen J. Ohnstad after my grandmoter and he were divorced. By the way, some places have it spelled Onstad. |
