Christiansen, Ole |
mollywoppy | Hi to all
I am looking for furth information on Ole (Sven - Severn) Christiansen. He came to Banks Peninsula from Oslo and farmed in Okaines Bay around 1890. He moved on from there to Masteron area. Be grateful for further information.
Cheers Jan |
askeroi | There are 26 Ole Christiansens in the 1875 cencus of Kristiania (Oslo). None with an S in the middle. To find the one you're asking for more info is needed - at least an estimated birth year... |
askeroi | In the 1865 cencus there are no Ole S Christiansens in Oslo but two in Nes on Romerike, Akershus - the sorrounding area to Oslo. Unfortunately they both are in their 6th year, i e they're both born about 1860 - so even an approximate birth year is problematic.
The 1875 cencus for Nes is not online, but I crosschecked the 1900 cencus to see if only one of them were still there then - if so we could illuminate him. Unfortunately there was none - but no less than three Ole Kristiansens all born in ca 1861...
On the other hand there's only one Ole Christiansen in the emmigration lists from Oslo with New Zealand as destination, but he left in 1873 (pretty far for 1890) so there's not much help there either...?

mollywoppy | Hi Askeroi
Thank you - brillant it could be a clue.
I have hunted down a bit more - it appears that he was born in Oslo in 1858. He married Ester Libeau 1889 so he could have arrived here anytime after 1840. He was 11 years older than his wife and she remarried after his death.
I know that often the spelling his lost on passenger lists and that Oslo encompasses a huge area of what would have been smaller towns no doubt. But I have not been able to pin even a ship down so would love to know more.

Jo Anne Sadler | Have you done any research to figure out exactly how they got to Australia? I doubt that they had a ship direct from Oslo. Most likely a feeder ship to Liverpool or other major European port.
On the Emigrant Ship Arrivals, 1870-1894 on this site, there is a good description of the shipping line Norddeutscher Lloyd which started regular service to Australia in 1886.

Also, there are four microfilms passenger lists for the Port of Adeleide, South Australia from 1898 to 1910 that can be rented from a local Family History Center.

Good luck[:)]

askeroi | Libeau is not a norwegian name - and there's absolutely none in the 1875 not the 1900 cencus - not even in today's phone book in all Norway. I therefor suppose that he married after leaving Norway. Then we have narrowed it down to departing between 1858 and 1889. The emmigration lists hardly list anyone going to New Zealand at all - and certainly no Ole Christiansens in any spelling as far as I can see. I can't find any Ole S.'s , and I get too many hits if I drop the S.
I'm afraid I can't be of more help with the sources and information available at the moment.
Maybe you should ask the question at digitalarkivet. You could happen to meet someone missing an Ole Christansen who left for NZ here

GOOD LUCK!! |
askeroi | I also thought he could have been a sailor - though you say he became a farmer in NZ. In the UK cencus 1881 there is a guy fitting pretty well on a british ship according to FS:
