Christiana
pat bradleyI am looking for information on my grandfather who emigrated to America through Boston Massachusetts from Christiana Norway around 1889. He was 19 years old, the story was that he had a fight with his brother and ran away. His name as I know it was Reinhardt Forguson. I believe his mother name was Gurine Gulbrandsen and his father Forger Nelson. He had a brother Jon and a sister who's name might have been Metia or Tita. His father was a fisherman who died at sea, but I do not know when. I was told that his brother did come to America to visit him around the 1903 or 1904, but I can not find any information on his family.[?]
HopkinsWhere did he live in the US? I have been unable to find anyone by that name in any US census.
askeroiForger is not a norwegian name. But Torger is. And there is one, and only one, in the 1865 cencus married to a Gurine Gudbarndsdatter. So here is his parents and siblings in the 1865 cencus: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60628.wc2&variabel=0&postnr=1&fulle=true&spraak=n
BorgeLooks like he went together with his brother Johan A. on the Rollo to Hull and on a Cunard Line steamer to Boston: Digitalarkivet
pat bradleyThank you for all your help! I had a feeling that Forguson was not my grandfathers right name, I thought Reinhardt was an odd name for someone from Norway also, but that is what is on his marriage certificate and all the census records for Newark , New Jersey that I have found. He married my grandmother Isabell O'Keefe in Newark, New Jersey on October 18, 1899. The only thing my mother knew was that he was from Kristiania, Norway and his father died at sea. Thank You Again Pat

Thank you for this information! I did not think Forguson was his right name, but it was the only one I had to go by. It helps me narrown down the time of his birth, which must have been around 1868 or 1869. Thank you again, I have been looking for information on him for over 3 years now without any results. Pat

Thank you. I thought my grandfather came to America by himself, his brother must have returned to Norway. Pat

I have been going through the census that you sent me for my grnadparents and there are a few names that I do not understand. What does Gardsnavn , Merknad (gard) mean. Also where does it give the name of the farm. I have tried using the Norwegian dictionary, but I could not find all of the names. Also how do I go about trying to find them in the next census. My grandfather was probably born between 1968-1870. Thank you for all your help. Pat
