[:)]Hello All:I am new to this forum and am searching for a link to finding the ship my ancestors came over on from Norway.I'm looking for a John (maybe Johann/Johannes) Sampson (may be Samuelson) and his wife Julia (Anderson (Andersdotter???)). They came over in late April 1872 based on what we know...with two daughters. Anni, born about 1866 and Gertrude born 3/13/1867. Another daughter, Sarah, was reportedly born on ship, April 30 1872 so if that's true, that's when they'd be enroute. They settled in Eau Claire Wisconsin but that may not have been their destination at the time they set out. If anyone can help steer me in the right direction I'd be most grateful. I'm trying to find the ship they came over on and, subsequently, learn what farm they came from and where in Norway. Many thanks to anyone who may be able to help.[:D]Warm regards,Jackie Peterson">

HopkinsWhere have you found John and Julia living in any US census? I looked in Eau Claire, Wis. censuses and could not find them... I was looking because a birthyear for each parent would be invaluable to the search.
Jackie3167Thank you for your response. I don't know their birth dates. The only one I know is their daughter Gertrude (b. March 13, 1867 (in Norway but I don't know which parish) and daughter Sarah who was supposedly born on ship 4/30/1872 but I don't know where they'd have recorded her birth. I could not find them in the Eau Claire census either. ..nor in the surrounding Chippewa Falls area. To make matters more of a puzzle it's also reported that they died in a flood in Eau Claire and are buried there but I can find no death record nor any news story of a flood that occurred in the late 1800's - 1900's that report any fatalities. I'm thinking I may just need to sit in front of the microfilm reader and look at every ship that crossed from Norway or England in that two week period and see if they pop out. I may need to do the same thing to find a birth record of Gertrude in Norway...just to get the parent's information. If they came over in 1872, Gertrude would have been 5 and her sister 7 so maybe I can look for a marriage record for 1864-5 & up. Any ideas on an archive to go to that might help? Again, Many thanks for your response!![:)]
BriningThe Digitalarkivet has many records on line for Norway Click Here If you click on "Categories" you will get a lot of different categories to select from. There is a good chance that Julia and Gertrude were not the names they used in Norway. Names often were "Americanized" so you may have to use your imagination Carla
Jackie3167Thank you for your help. Will the digitalarkivet do research for someone? If so what does it cost? Regards, Jackie Peterson
askeroiDigitalarkivet is the national archies digital site. They don't do research for anybody. You'll have to find a private person to do jobs like that. But before you do so, you should go to the site and start a debate asking the same questions as you have done here. There's a lot of helping hands reading the pages. On the other hand. I looked through the databases for immigrants, and there is a Gjertud Johnsdatter leaving Trondheim 28 july 1871 heading for Eau Claire. But (please note) the age is wrong. Maybe the mother too - and the father is missing). But at least take a look at her: http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMITROND&variabel=0&postnr=9205&fulle=true&spraak=n Was it to any help?
Jackie3167Thank you so much for your response! I went to look at the link you provided. I don't think it's my great grandmother. That family group looks like a single woman with two children (if I'm reading it correctly) and my grandmother came over with both parents and a sister, and her mother was pregnant with another sister who supposedly was born on ship. I believe their name could also be Simonsen. I have been searching the digitalarchivet site with every combination of names I can think of but no luck as yet. I so appreciate your advice to start a dialogue/debate there and see if anyone responds. While our oral family history says they were in Eau Claire there certainly is no verification and at this point, who knows what they declared as their destination. Do you think it might be helpful to start with birth records for my grandmother and just go parish by parish and see if I can find her. I know I need to look at the ship arrivals here in the US and in Canada to see if I can find their arrival. If so I'll get a ships name and maybe that will help. Again, many thanks for your help.
