Family Name Research
amybethGood Morning everyone! I am having trouble in researching my boyfriends family name. They swear they are Norwegian with a last name of Burton. I have tried to break down the name, and maybe that was i could some-how trace back the roots to a town. No luck. However, i did find that the name is acutally English. I am so confused! I just love this family to death and i think they would really appreciate it. Any suggestions. [;)] Amy

amybethOH GREAT [V] I thought i was on the right track. So then maybe they are English after all. I found Bourton as another was of spelling, but i agree that when they immigrated to here alot of last names were changed. thank you. Thank you again. Peace Amy
BorgeIt could also be that the Burton or Bourton is an Americanized form of a Norwegian name. It might be possible to trace the emigration if we knew the names and years when their ancestors emigrated.
amybethI will ask them! Thank you so much!!!! Amy[:D]
BriningOn the US census there are 5 "Burton" listed as born in Norway so it is not unheard of. Do you have any names of anyone who could be located on the census? Getting copies of death certificates, marriage license, etc might give a clue as to the original Norwegian name. Carla
amybethThey really don't have anykind of paperwork. However, the maiden name is Johnson. And she did say that he had come directly from Norway into Wisconsin. She said her Dads parents where pretty young when they came here and he is 71 this year. I wish i could find the town, but that would almost be impossible now.
HopkinsWhat were/are the names of the grandparents - like the 'Dad' who is now 71? when were they born? when did they die? where did they live? We could be looking at information on a census now - but would not be able to recognize them...
hastoIs she Mary Burton (20) in Marshfield, Wn, in 1880 census? It looks like she is maried to William (22) who is born in Wisconsin.
gunnarI know that Bråten, Braaten, Bråthen, Braathen became Burton in America. The name tells how the land was cleared, by fire.
