Poseidon
Peter WilsonI Started with family oral history that my Great Grandfather came from Norway, jumped ship in South Australia and changed his name from Olson/Olsen to Wilson. It is also believed that he was accompanied by another person when he jumped ship. To cut the story short, Australian records that match closest indicate a Thomas Olversen 18 Ordinary Seaman along with Ingrebert Ingrebesson 23 AB and Christopher Christopherson 28 AB jumped ship on 16-3-1874. The latter two were arrested and finded and departed with the ship. The ship was the Poseidon. A Norwegian barque cargo ship with the master named Ellisen and owned by or agent J Webster and Co. Its journey was Norway, London (departed 5 Nov 1873) , Adelaide,(Arrived Feb 1874) London. It carried fire bricks, wire, pig iron, coal, batterns, floor boards and stout and returned with 6698 bags of wheat. How can I track down information on this ship or its owners?
BorgeHello Peter I recommend that you start by sending a request to the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo. The chances are best if you are able to provide the name of the master (captain). Include as much information about the ship as possible, as there were probably more than one ship by that name. This is the address: Norsk Sjøfartsmuseum Bygdøynesveien 37 0286 Oslo NORWAY
Peter WilsonThank you Borge
Peter WilsonThe museum was extremely helpful, I am very impressed by the friendly way in which Norwegians are willing to assist. Peter Wilson[/i]
