Rugland
rustynailI am looking for my great great grandparents. Thore Thorson Rugland and Johanne Sannon. I know Thore came here in 1912 But after that I can not find him. Him and two sons went to Chicago,Il. Now Johanne stayed in Norway.I would like to find her family. On her son death cert. it gives her maiden name as Sannon. In the 1900 cen. it gives it as Rugland. When her daughter Naima Rugland came over it gives the name Johanne Foss. Can anyone help?? Thank you very much!!
HopkinsYou are looking for Thore 'Rugland', born ca. 1879 in Stavanger, Norway immigrated to the Chicago area in Illinois. The 1920 census lists a 41 year old Thore 'Reigland' living in Chicago, Cook Co., Ill. Enumeration District 1371. Source: National Archives Microfilm Series: T625 Roll: 335 Page: 235 The March 1912 departure from Trondheim makes it appear that Thore and his sons Thoralf and Magnus are already American residents. In the 1920 US census Thore 'Reigland' listed 1902 as his immigration year. So I checked the 1910 US census and Thore Thoreson 31 years old is living in Chicago, Cook Co. Illinois. So he has been in the states since soon after 1900, making at least one trip back to Norway in 1912. The woman Johanne Rugland (using same surname as husband) in the 1900 Norwegian census in Trondheim was born about 1872 in 'Ørlandet' - which is probably Ørland district of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. Their infant son, Thoralf Alfred, was born in Trondheim. The 1865 Norwegian census does show two farm locations in Ørlandet by the name of Sannan - so that is quite likely to be the correct location to look for Johanne's earlier family history.
rustynailThank you, I looked where you told me but I found a few farms that were named Sannan. Will you look for me maybe this will help. Johanne's daughter Naima came here to live with her uncle John Adolfsen 984 Mallord Ave. Portland,Oregon in 1924. Something that is strange is that in the ship records it says she was born in Chicago,Il. Also John is on Johannes side. The only Ruglands are Thore-father,Thornalf Alfred, and Magnus both sons. Also ship records says her uncle that came with her paid her ticket. His name was Olav Arthur Larsson. Thank you again!!!!!
HopkinsGood, you found a few Sannan farms in Ørland, you expected to find many? 'm still not sure exactly what you are hoping to find. Johanne's parents? a daughter born in an unknown year who had the given name Naima? (What year was this Naima born??) Johanne was married to Thore Rugland and there was no daughter in the 1900 Norwegian census when they lived in Trondheim.
BriningHi On Ellis Island Thore Rugland immigrated Dec 31, 1901 22 yr old shoemaker going to his brother in law 91 Center Ave Chicago Johanne Raugland with 2 sons immigrated Sept 14 1902 going to husband at 91 Center ave in Chicago. Both Thore and Johanne emigrated from Stavanger (Thore's birthplace in the 1900 census) Naima Rugland age 19 arrived Oct 20 1924 so she would have been born around 1905 and she probably was born in Illinois since Johanne came in 1902 In the census records, the Thore Reigland/Thoreson Hopkins found is married to a Helga ???? and in 1910 it says they have been married 10 years. So is this the right Thore and there was a divorce and Johanne went back to Norway? That would explain the Johanne Foss listed as Naima's mother on the immigration record. I guess Chicago would be where to look to see if there are any divorce/marriage records for Thore Carla
BriningNanna Johanne Rugland, born 1904, leaving from Trondhiem July 17, 1924 Click Here Carla
BriningHere is Johan Adolfs. Sannen leaving Trondheim in 1899 Click Here This is a good possibility for Johan's father in the 1900 census Click Here So if Johanne and Johan are brother and sister that is also probably her family. Carla
rustynailHello, Thank you to everyone!! Naima was born Dec. 26,1904 in Chicago,Il. I would like to find both Johanne's and Thore's parents. They both seem to have been a mystery. Thanks for helping me!! From what my family has said Johanne never came over here but that looks like that is wrong. This all is so exciting!!
rustynailI have another ? When Naima Rugland came here she was with three men. On the ship records it asks who pays for your ticket and it says her uncle see line 19. With two of the men it also says see line 19. Then on line 19 it says aunt see line 19. The aunt is in usa. Now does this mean that they are all related? Also they all went to different parts of the us. It also says they went to live with aunt and uncles. I have 8 names is it possible they are also related? Melanie
BriningIt says column 19 not line so the person that paid for the ticket is the person listed in column 19 which has the name of who they are going to. Carla
MonaHi Melanie Ort I wonder if you have sent me an email were you say you have a phone book regarding Loveng. I have received a mail from you, but I think the email adress must be wrong, because it came back to me. So if you have sent me that mail, I would very much like you to send me the book. My email is borgemon@c2i.net
Robin ThorsonIf you are "Hopkins" - HELP!! Magnus Thorson I can't believe I could have stumbled onto my family I'm searching for. I've been looking for my great-grandfather from Norway. My mom and dad divorced when I was young so I have very little to go on to find him. I believe he was a seaman from Norway. Family legend says he jumped ship in America. Conflicting info on census lists shows he entered in 1884-86 and 1899. Our family is from Chicago. I have no info on his siblings. Magnus Thorson married Mary Berg in 1900 in Chicago and one of his sons is Marvin. Could my Magnus be a brother to Thore Rugland? He was born in either Feb 2, 1875 or Jan or 1876. I have always throught we were from Oslo. It would match to have a nephew named Magnus. And if Thore was born in 1879, perhaps Magnus was his older brother. Thanks for any help. Robin
HopkinsI cannot imagine how this got caught up with the odd thread that tangled around the earlier 'Rugland' . I would think it unlikely that your Magnus would be related to Thore Rugland. You family lore mentioned Oslo. Thore Rugland had no ties to that area. You are looking for a Magnus Thorson born about 1875/1876. You say he could have left for America in 1884 or 1886 -- but some source listed 1899??? If your Magnus left Norway in the earlier time period he would have been a young boy - probably would have travelled with his family. He later resided in Chicago, Illinois. There are two databases of departure records from the port of Oslo/Kristiania (Digitalarkivet). Here is a young Magnus which closely matches the information you gave - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=61432&sokefelt=skjul (The family is from 'Kr.a.' -- that looks like an abbreivation for Kristiania = Oslo.)
Robin ThorsonThanks so much for your reply. I do have this information bookmarked on my computer thinking that could be Magnus. Do you know what the "G" means on that page for Josefine? Is it married, widowed or divorced? I'm wondering since she is by herself. Is there any info there that might lead me further in Norway? I should be able to find them going through Ellis or where ever the Rollo landed. It's very tough to maneuver around the Digitalarkivet. Does this say by chance where in Kristiana they're from? Do you know the web site to search the emigration records in Norway? You've been very helpful and I really appreciate your help! Robin
