Frithjof Andersen Schuman (Drammen,Kristiania)
dazzle	I am searching for details about my grandfather's family, Frithjof(also known asFridjkof, Fred) Andersen,born Drammen, March 9,1876(7) I can find him in the 1900 census in Kristiania, Municipality#0301,Street: Sogade 20. This is the household of his mother Julie Andersen(b.Jan.1841, Tonsberg), with siblings, Karen (b.1869),Jenny(b.1880),Oscar(b.1884) and Signe(b.1885).. all born in Drammen. Frithjof has his wife Inga(nee Christiansen, b.Oct,1877 Kragero) and daughter Ingerid(b.Sept,1899) also living at this address. Frithjof sailed to the US as Fred Andersen on the SS.Virgil, leaving Hull, Oct 1903, arriving New York, Oct 22,,1903 and transferred to Ellis Island January 1904.(I had to go through Steve Morse's site as theEllis Island site did not bring up the correct manifest!) Wife and 3 daughters(Ingerud, b.1899, Margit b.1901, Astrid, b.1903) arrived Ellis Island,September 1905, on the Hellig Olav. Frithjof changed his name to Fred Andersen Schuman, and sometime around 1908-9 moved the family, now with 2 US- born sons, one being my father) to California.. Grandfather Fred died in Los Angeles Nov. 1953. The death certificate says his father's name was Mathias Schuman, born Norway. I can't find Mathias!!..or mother Julie.or any siblings...also looking for Grandfather Fred and wife Inga's marriage date.... Would very much appreciate any help or advice Daz [:)]
Ron	Dear Daz, I am afraid I cannot help you, but your question intrigues me as there may be some link to one of the possibly three Schuman(n) families in Norway. One family (my own ancestry) can be traced back to Bergen and Germany (two brothers arrived in 1770). They have numerous descendants, but none that match your search for Matthias and/or Julie. A second family goes back to a more recent immigrant (mid-1800s) and I doubt they are related to you. A third family (probably the most ancient Schuman(n) in Norway)was linked to Christiania (now Oslo), the Grenland area (Telemark) and Drammen (at that time called Strømsø and Bragernes). This must be where your ancestry comes in. I am unsure about the details of this third family and would very much like to find out more as they haven't left many traces in the records. If you would be interested I could send you the little I know and we could compare notes. Do you know anything more about your grandfather that could give us a clue? Kind regards
