thor olsen, kragerø policeman 1865 census
viking.ukKragerø connections: Thor Olsen, Policeman, 1865 census I am descended from Thor Olsen who was a policeman in Kragerø. I have found him in the 1865 census, and also a reference to his daughter Kirsten marrying a Swede Levin Olander and emigrating to Wisconsin in 1881 with children Victor Oluffa and Ivar. Thor's first wife was Helene, and he probably married second wife Severine around 1862. Children of Thor and Helene: Kirsten b 1851, Iver b 1854, Ole,b 1857, Neils Peter b 1859, Alberth M. b 1861. Child of Thor and Severine, Thora S. born 1863. I am descended from Niels Peter Olsen, a sailor who eventually married and settled in Liverpool UK. I am seeking both earlier family history and links to other branches of the family in Norway and the US. Also advice on best way to access church records for Kragerø for 1800 onwards. (I can only find data for Swedish immigrants to Kragerø on line at www.disnorge.no)
hastoThe 1865 census lists that Thor Olsen was 43 yrs. (born 1823) from Gjerstad parish. I used this link to find Gjerstad parish in Familysearch: http://80.62.84.41/php/batch_nr/igi_soeg_form_n.php I did not find Kragerø in Familysearch. viking.ukHarald, Many thanks for the help given above, and apologies for not thanking you sooner! You are right: there was only one marriage. I think some of my relatives had confused different branches of the family and got the names mixed up. Any clues re tracing the original address given in the 1865 census? viking.ukHarald, Many thanks again. If you ever need any help regarding Norwegian- US emigration via Liverpool, please let me know. Probably 90% emigrants took the Norway -Hull- Liverpool route before boarding transatlantic liners. Unfortunately, there are few individual records here. There used to be a Norwegian church here, but it has merged in recent years with the Swedish Gustav Adolph church (a magnificent building of scandinavian design built in the 19th century when emigration was at its peak).
