Grove family
karenjohnI am trying to research the Grove family. I do not know if the spellings are going to be accurate in the norwegian language but this is the information I have. Jacob Grove (b.1817 in Norway d. 1901 in USA) and son Sven J. Grove (b. 09-15-1854 in Sand or near Stavanger, Norway d. 11-11-1939 in North Dakota, USA) immigrated to the USA in 1872. (Jacob possibly had another son H. Grove born in 1860). Sven was reared and educated near Stavanger, Norway. When Jacob and Sven arrived in the USA they first lived in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. In 1886 went to North Dakota. Any helpful hints on spelling and/or family information would be greatly appreciated
HopkinsSven lives with his widowed father and a brother on the Grovemoen farm in Sand, Rogaland at the time of the 1865 Norwegian census. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1136&kenr=003&bnr=0025&lnr=000 This entry in the database of emigrants from the port of Stavanger MIGHT be Sven leaving from that port. But the original records were burned - and this 'rebuilt' entry no longer includes definite dates or information about any ship - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=STAV&gardpostnr=59731&merk=59731#ovre Don't worry about spelling exactness - records of that time period in Norway will rarely show consistent spelling. Use 'sounds like' and look for hints about typical character substitutions you may find in other records. The Sand and Jelsa area of Rogaland is included in the LDS Family History Library collection - parish records as early as 1780 are copied to microfilm for your use. There are also several published histories of the area (some may include information about the genealogies of the people who lived in the area) - "Bygdasoga for Sand i Ryfylke" by Åmund Salveson; "Sand Gardar og Folk"; 3 volumes by Ernst Berge Drange; "SULDAL kultursoge: Soga om Sand" by Rolf Høibo. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~wgnorway/NorLinks.htm
karenjohnThank you so much. Do you know of a good english-norwegian-english dictionary/website to help me translate some of the digitalarkivet pages.
HopkinsSeveral - http://home.online.no/%7Eotjoerge/files/word.htm http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na17.html http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Rg/frameset_rg.asp?Dest=G1&Aid=&Gid=&Lid=&Sid=&Did=&Juris1=&Event=&Year=&Gloss=&Sub=&Tab=&Entry=&Guide=WLNorway.ASP http://www.rhd.uit.no/art/michael02.html My favorite Norwegian-English Dictionary in actual BOOK form is the one edited by Einar Haugen in green paperback cover. I bought my copy through Amazon.com
HopkinsThe Sven Grove family lives 'next door' to the Anfin Bale (looks like Ball) family in the 1910 US census for Pierce County, North Dakota.
Carolie888Hi - Sven Grove was my great-grandfather. His son Jacob was my mother's father. I'm curious about you guys who've replied. Any new information on the family? Jacob's oldest daughter, my Aunt Arliss just passed away in Rugby at age 77. Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon.
HopkinsNo need for curiousity about me. I'm not related to the Grove family in any way and have am doing no research on them. Just looked up some information based on the questions asked by the original poster.
Carolie888Well, thanks! It's very exciting to see someone I don't know looking for a common ancestor. Thank you for your help! carol
