Party of immigrants from Furnes, Norway
NancyCI am looking for a party of immigrants from Furnes (Vang sokn), Hedmark, Norway. They supposedly left Norway in 1862. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of passenger lists for this year, but perhaps someone has more information? They are as follows in the local history book for Furnes: Kristian Larssen Stor-Kylstad, 32 years Eli Andersdotter, wife, 37 years Agnete Kristiansdotter, daughter, 9 years Lars Kristiansen, son, 4 3/4 years Marte Hansdotter Åsberget, widow, 64 years Hans Andersen Vesl-Ile, "bachelor", 22 years, may also belong to this party Thanks for any information!
BriningA pretty good possibility for them in the 1870 census for Iowa LARSON CHRISTIAN age 40 born NORW ALLAMAKEE County CENTER TWP Wife Ellen age 45 born Norway Son Lars age 13 born Norway daughter Mary age 7 born Iowa Son Andrew age 3 born Iowa There is also a 31 year old Hans Anderson on the same census page born in Norway. In Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, Center Township, Allamakee County, Iowa there is listed Hansdatter, Marit born 1799 Dec 31 died 1882 Feb 13 Click Here Click Here for the Allamakee County, Iowa IA Genweb site You could find more information there. NancyCThank you for the information. I am glad to know about the info in the 1870 census, as there doesn't seem to be any free access to it on the Web any more. I have also checked the Marit Hansdotter in the Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, and she is a possibility. However, the Veldre Church record, where she was christened, lists the date for her christening as 8 Dec 1799. Is there anyone in the 1870 census that could be her? Marte's son, known as Nels A. Nelson, was living in Lansing at this time, so it would be reasonable that his mother and others could be found there. Nels was married to Anne Marie Jacobson from Walnut Grove Farm outside Waterville, IA.
BriningOn the same page in the 1870 census there is a Martha Hanson age 72. She appears to be living with Jans and Mary Hanson and Hans Anderson is in the same household. There is a transcription of the census Click Here In the 1880 census she is age 80 and listed as Jens mother in law Click Here Carla
NancyCThis is wonderful! Thank you so much. I'm quite sure that this is my family. The ages are right, the names are either correct or plausible, and the area is where my great-grandparents lived. Martha is my great-great-grandmother, and Mary (Maria) the sister of my great-grandfather. I have been looking for them for years. No one alive could tell me about them, and I thought for a long time that they had stayed in Norway. I see that these census reels were transcribed for the GenWeg project. Are these and others done for this project available on line? Every time I run into a census link, I end up at Ancestry.com or similar, and they always want me to subscribe in order to see it. I am so grateful that you are willing to share this information!
BriningI'm happy to help. There are various sites that have indexes or images on line. The home page for US Genweb project Click Here has links to some of them. I often go to Google http://www.google.com/ and type the name of the state or county followed by the word archives, for example Iowa achives or Allamakee Iowa archives. That will sometimes bring up some good sites. Good Luck Carla
NancyCThanks again! You are so generous to answer questions like these!
