Bale & Fedje families
karenjohnI am looking for information on the following families: Anfin Bale (b. June 1861 d. abt.1954) married Brita Fedje (b.July 1872 d. abt. 1944) in abt. 1897. Anfin's parents are unknown. Brita Fedje's father was Hans Fedje (b. Nov.12,1852 in Feois, Sogn, Norway d. abt. 1923). Hans was married to Randi Fedje -not sure if last name is right-(b. Nov 15, 1849 in Norway d. abt. 1928) Siblings for Brita include: Mary, Marta, Christian, Andrew, Martha Albert, Julia and Andrew H. I was also wondering if anyone could give me a link to a good English Norwegian dictionary website to help me with translation. Thank you Karen Johnson
TintThe dictionary I like best is Wordfinder. Take a look on www.wordfinder.com

HopkinsThe 1900 US census shows the Hans Fedje and Anfin Bale families living 'next door' to each other in Pierce County, North Dakota. All family members, except Anfin and Bertha's young daughter were born in Norway and they are all listed as having emigrated 1896. Of the entire group - only Hans, Rangdi, and Anfin would be old enough to be captured in the 1865 Norwegian census. If we can find them where they were living then - it would narrow down the choices of departure ports to be searched for their records in emigration registers... This looks like Hans Fedje in the 1865 census - living on the Fedje farm in Leikanger district of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway with parents and siblings. He later named his first son Christen - the same given name (understanding the spelling variations) of his own father, Kristen. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1419&kenr=004&bnr=0020&lnr=000 Hans and Randi must have lived on another farm called 'Aafedt' before they emigrated - Hans later choosing to use the farm name of his birth? as a surname. They sailed from the port of Bergen on or about April 29, 1896 on a ship of the Cunard line - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0220EMIG&gardpostnr=664&merk=664#ovre Anfin is recorded as leaving Norway in 1886 according to the 1920 US census (perhaps I misread the 1900?) - and from the port of Bergen in 1886 appears this entry - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0203EMIG&gardpostnr=361&merk=361#ovre (Balestrand district is also in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway)
HopkinsAnfin and 'Britha' named their oldest daughter Synneva (according to the 1910 US census). IF this was also the name of Anfin's own mother - then consider this entry in the 1865 Norwegian census for Balestrand - http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1418&kenr=001&bnr=0042&lnr=000
karenjohnThank you so much. I will look at the links you gave me and see how far I can take that information. Karen Johnson
