Relatives in Fitjar, Hordaland, Norway in 1865-188
JensPaulsensGreatgrandson1) I am looking for information on my Norwegian ancesters. Jens Poulsen AKA Jens Paulsen was born 9/19/1829 in Stord, Hordaland, Norway. Who were his parents and where did they come from?? According to the census, Jens lived in 1865 on a farm-Rimmereide- in Fitjar, Hordaland, Norway and also in 1875 with his wife, Barbra Andersdatter, and children. What year did Jens Paulsen die and where? Did he emigrate to the USA and when? 2) I am looking for information on my great grandmother, Barbra Andersdatter( AKA in the USA as Barbara Anderson). She was born 7/14/1829 in Ulvik, Hordaland, Norway . Her father was listed as Anders Jacobsen and her mother as Donneal Svendsdr. When she married 8/4/1860 in Stord, Hordaland to Jens Paulsen, her father was listed as Anders Gabrielson. Who was her true father? When did she emigrate to the USA? I have not found any US census data with her name.
HopkinsThe 1865 Norwegian census lists birthplaces as part of the census enumeration. Looking at the census of the Rimmereide farm you probably noticed that it lists the birthplace of Jens Paulsen and Barbara Andersdatter as Fitjar in Hordaland. The much older widowed woman living in the household, Inga Jensdatter, is listed as Jens' mother and SHE was born in Ulvik, Hordaland. http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=1222&kenr=004&bnr=0031&lnr=000 There isn't an online census database between the 1865 and the 1801 - so you'll want to turn to offline sources to answer your questions. Parish church records and possibly published history/genealogy books (bygdebøker or ættar boks) will exist for the area of Fitjar. Let's check the online library catalog of the LDS Family History Library system to see what they have copied to microfilm or fiche that you could use at any of their network of small Family History Centers. (The catalog can be found at www.familysearch.org and the microfilm or fiche are available for small fees for use of usually about five to six weeks.) The library catalog indicates that they have the church records for Fitjar in Hordaland available for years as early as 1725. In addition at least two different versions of multi-volume history books for Fitjar have been published - "Fitjar bygdebok", 2 volumes by Simon Steinsbø; and "Fitjar, bygdeskipnad og bygdesoga", 3 volumes by Jacob Aaland. The books do not appear to have been copied to microfilm or fiche - but that's when interlibrary-loan through your local public library might prove productive. The church records also ususally contained a section for persons leaving the parish and the date of when they left for 'Amerika' might be recorded there. The Ulvik area of Hordaland is also well represented in the LDS library collection. But I think I'd concentrate on the Fitjar area first - just in case the entry for the mother's birthplace might be in error.
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonThank you for the information!
HopkinsThe LDS library catalog might also explain the mentions of both Stord and Fitjar. Under the category Church Records for Stord it has the following narrative - "Contains the parish registers for Stord clerical district which includes Stord parish. Also included Fitjar parish until 1862 when it became part of the new Fitjar clerical district; and Valestrand parish until 1870 when it bacame part of Sveio clerical district."
BriningJens Paulsen Rimmereide died in 1882, Sept 3. in Fitjar Click Here Carla
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonThank you again!!!! I now am looking for the exact departure date/ship/and name used on the passenger list of each of Jens Paulsen Rimmereide's family who left Fitjar to go to America. I have not found any of the names on any passenger lists between 1882-1889 from Norway to America yet I know that they did arrive in the USA. 1. Barbra Andersdatter, his wife, born as "Barbru Andersdr" 2/1828 in Stord , Hordaland, Norway ( I do not have the exact date) to Anders Gabrielsen and Kari Ellingsdr. In the USA, she was referrred to her as< Barbara Anderson>. I have looked on many passenger lists and found nothing. When and where did she die in the USA? 2. Haagen Jensen Rimmereide( AKA Haakon Johnson in the USA ) , his first son, born as "Haagen Jensen" 6/1/1861 in Stord. 3. Pauls Jensen Rimmereide ( AKA Paul Johnson in the USA), his second son, born April, 1862( I do not have an exact date.) in Stord. 4. Konrad Andreas Jensen Rimmereide( AKA Andrew Johnson in the USA) , his third son, born 1867( I do not have an exact date) but he was christened 6/2/1867 in Fitjar . 5. Inga Karoline Jensdatter( AKA Inga Caroline Johnson in the USA before her marriage to Albert Berry in the USA in 1902), his only daughter that I know of, born 2/2/1870 in Fitjar.
HopkinsThe closest port will be Bergen - so the emigration databases at the Digitalarkivet website would be a good place to search. Haakon Jensen leaving that port in 1882 - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0106EMIG&gardpostnr=61&merk=61#ovre brother Paul/Poul two years later - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0106EMIG&gardpostnr=96&merk=96#ovre and two more siblings in two more years - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=0106EMIG&gardpostnr=139&merk=139#ovre
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonI am dumbfounded with the outstanding data you sent me!!!!!!!
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonWhat happened to Barbra Andersdatter from the Rimmereide Farm in Fitjar, Hordaland, Norway in the 1880s and when did she come to the USA?
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonI just looked up the ship arrivals to New York for 5/20/1886 on the Thingvalla Line's ship, S/S Hekla and found the ship that Konrad Jensen Rimereid and Inga Jensdatter arrived on. Thank you for this lead!!!! However, I had no news about finding the National Line departing Bergen, Norway 4/23/1884 to go to New York and have Poul Jensen Romereid as a passenger. I did find two possible ships, SS Egypt 5/25/1884 and SS Spain 5/11/1884 or 5/10/1884. How can I find out if either is the correct ship that carried Poul Jensen Romeried of Fitjar, Hordaland, Norway to America?
HopkinsThe passenger lists for arrivals in the port of New York are also on microfilm through the US National Archives and copies of those microfilms are also in the LDS library system. Searching through such lists can be a bit tedious - but the whooping and hollering when you are successful in finding what you wanted is great fun! You'll want to estimate when the ships may have arrived and order the film(s) which should cover such arrivals. Of course, that port received many ships from many origins and seeing the wide variety of ships, ports of departure and passenger nationalities is fascinating too. The lists are pretty much in chronological order as ships arrived. You can also look online to see if anyone else has already used those lists AND been generous enough to turn the list(s) into online information. You might look for the Ships Transcribers Guild - that's one I've used in the past (but didn't keep the URL). You'll probably find the address at CyndisList.com. It may also be a link mentioned somewhere on this website - and I've possibly just forgotten. (I prefer seeing the microfilms of the original records and doing my own interpretation of handwriting and spelling oddities.) If you order the passenger list arrival films and go through them yourself - consider volunteering to capture the information for such website(s). I've searched the emigration registrations from the port of Bergen at the Digitalarkivet website several times and can't find Barbara mentioned with the information that is available so far. I also couldn't find her listed in the Digitalarkivet database of "Døde i Fitjar 1862-1966" where friend Brining found Jens listed. The Fitjar records and books I earlier mentioned may be of assistance.
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonThe only place that I did find Barbra Andersdatter was on the Norwegian 1865 and 1875 Census as living in Fitjar on the Rimmereide farm with jens Paulsen and their children when I looked on the microfilms. I also tried to find if she died in Norway and never left to go to America.
HopkinsIf you've looked at the censuses on microfilm - have you also looked at the parish church records on microfilm? Did that parish keep pretty good listings of the persons 'leaving the parish' (utflytte section - or similar spelling). Perhaps she didn't emigrate but as a widow moved somewhere else? Of course, I have seen lists of parish deaths that did seem to omit some persons - I think usually due to my own difficulty in trying to read the handwriting.... some time periods in some areas are "challenging"! You are lucky that you are dealing with a female with a less common given name like Barbara..... (or any other spelling similar version).
JensPaulsensGreatgrandsonDoes anyone know about the Fitjar parish church records on microfilm listing leaving the parish in 1886-1896? I am looking for widow Barbra Andersdatter, wife of Jens Paulsen, of Rimmereide farm Fitjar, Hordaland, Norway.
draupnyrThe following info is from “Fitjar bygde book” • Jens Paulson Rimbareid born 1829, died 1882. Married to Barbru Andersdtr. Revet. He received a fine of 5 specidalar, payable to the poor house. He refused the fine because all he did was to put the stone back on the grave it had been taken from in the first place. Does not say anything about how it all ended. Kids: Kari 1822 Ragna 1820 Rasmus 1822 Marta 1827 Jens 1829 Håkon 1832 Paul’s parents: • Rasmus Paulson Rimbareid 1756 to 1823 • Kari Jørgensdtr died 1831 at 79 years old.
