brketoIm looking for info on may great grandparents Andreas Paulson Bergh left Kongsberg, Norway in 1867 on the Rjukan to Quebec,Ca with wife and six children Grandmother Karren Pedersdatter Overboe left Solvern,Indersogan,Norway in 1870 abord the Mercator they were taken off there course and were on the ocean for 19 weeks. She was daughter ofSjur Overboe Pederson and in other info I have its Sjur Pederson Overboe and I have her as Karren Pedersdatter Overboe Pederson
jwiborgHmmm.... strange. Did the bark Rjukan have several trips to America in 1867? Does anybody know? Børge? Here is the Passenger list for the departure from Skien, Norway on April 20th, arriving Quebec on May 30th., 1867. Kongsberg doesn't have any harbour so it's quite likely that the family departured from Skien or Christiania, but I could not find Andreas Paulsen Berg on the list... According to this page, the ship Mercator departed from Bergen on April 29th, and arrived at Quebec on June 30th, spending something like 8-9 weeks crossing the Atlantic. Could there have been several trips that year also? Jan
ninakarlsI find Andreas on the passenger-list of Rjukan 1869 with wife and 4 children. Maybe you can find a record of their arrival in Quebec? Could this also be him returning for a visit and leaving with his son? brketoThanks for the information, I had found that one also, but one of my proplems is the name Bergh is 85% time spelled Berg . I know our church THe Drammen Lutheran in Drammen Township between Eau Claire and Mondovi where all the records were burned years ago when the church burned, and some one redid them and they had my fathers name as Berg and his birth date wrong, WE were trying to get a passport as he was going on trip to Norway, At time he was 67 and passport wanted babtism or birth certifacte, which he had never had, or two people that could verifie when he was born, well we found the old township chaireman and was 99 years old could only make a shaky x and his son verified that it was him and one uncle had there mothers family bible with at the fot dates and name of each one, My cousin never ever seen the bible she said and her mother is just 101 and had to be put in care home as he fell while living alone and memory is fadding. Have to ecuse my typing and spelling as I only have one eye so I dont alway huit the key I think I m Thanks for the help Dick
arneholAre you sure that it was in 1867? If you look at the list for 1868 you can find: Andreas Berg with wife and 4 children. This is (probably) Andreas Paulsen Berg with wife Lise Johnsdatter and children Adolf Severin, Jonas, Halfdan Ludvig, Martin and Paul Johan (That is five children, not four as in the shipslist). Don't know if this helps or confuses, but sending the reply anyway. I am for the time beeing looking at emigrants (mainly to the USA) from Sandsvær / Kongsberg.
brketoarnehol 'yes I looked at that but number of childer isnt right, The children names are adolph Severin; Joans; Halfdan Ludwig; Martin; Paul Johan died aborad ship and was buried at sea; I just wounder if it is called four because of Paul Johan died at sea and was buired at see and never reached the port of Quebec. The following is all the info that I have been able to gather from and aunt that is 96 years old and she dont know where she got the info, so Im starting from scratch.Martin was my grandfather, Clarence my father MARTIN BERGH HISTORY Page 1 –of 3 Clarence’s father was Martin Bergh son of Andreas Paulson Bergh Martin’s father was, Andreas Paulson Bergh Born; at Kongsberg, Norway Aug 28 , 1833 Died April 21, 1914 Married 1st wife; Lise Johansdatter Lovlia at Kongsberg, Norway Married 2nd wife: ??? Burial at Norwegian Lutheran Cemetary Eau Claire, Wi off Omaha St CHILDREN; BORN; DIED: Josephine Pauline May 9, 1855 ?? Amalie Lovise June 8, 1856 June 13, 1856 Adolph Severin Dec 27, 1857 Dec 28, 1895 Boy ( stillborn) July 14, 1861 Sillborn Jonas Oct 6, 1859 July 9, 1947 Halfdan Ludwig Aug 25, 1862 May 25, 1931 Martin Nov 8, 1864 Jan 14, 1935 Clarence’s father Paul Johan May 23, 1867 May 12, 1868 Christian Sept 26, 1869 ??? in California Boy (stillborn) Nov 18, 1871 Stillborn HISTORY; Andreas Bergh owned a small house in Norway, which he tried to sell before leaving for America, but being unable to sell it, he just left it, only taking what they could and would need. He was a gunsmith, by trade, so had made a coffee grinder which they took with them. On board ship they had two stoves, one for the crew and one for the passangers. When the crewmen saw him grind coffee, the cook wanted to use the grinder, so they made an agreement, whereby the cook would use the grinder. And Grandma could use the stove tocook on. That went alright part of the time, but when ever there would be trouble about using the stove, granpa would take the grinder away too. Andreas Paulson Bergh and family left for the United States, from Norway, in May 1867, on the ship RUKAN . It took them 9 weeks and they landed in Quebec, Canada. An epidemic of dysentery broke out on board ship during the crossing. Their son Paul Johan, took sick, and died, so he was buried at sea. The father took his tool-chest, and weighted it down with rocks, etc, and used this as a coffin for the little boy. They came to Red Wing, Mn lived there for 3 years then to St Paul, for a ytear,then back to red Wing, for another year, before moving to the Eau Claire area. After some time they bought a piece of land in Brunswick, Township and lived there. His frist wife Lise Johansdatter, died in St Paul, and is buried there. He then remarried;
BriningHi I think Ninakarls has the right emigration year and found them on the 1865 census. In the 1970 census in Redwing there is Berg, Andrew age 37 Eliza (Lise) 37 Eddie (Adolph) age 12 John (Jonas) 11 Louis (Halfdan Ludwig) 8 Martin 5 Christian 9 months (the census was recorded June 16th) All are listed as being born in Norway. It looks like Josephine and Amalie had died before the 1865 Norwegian census In the 1900 census for Eau Claire Andrew Bergh born Aug 1833 immigated 1869 Martin Bergh born Nov 1864 immigrated 1869 Louis Bergh born Aug 1862 immigrated 1869 Carla
BriningIn the 1880 census Click Here Andrew is married to Ingra A. age 49 and it shows Christian as being born in Minnesota which makes sense if he was born in Sept. Annie Anderson, sister in law is living with them so Ingra A. probably stands for Ingra Anderson Carla
arneholMy sugestion for using 1868 instead of 1867 is a list of emigrants from Kongsberg and Sandsvaer. It was printed in a local historical magazine in the mid 1980's. In number 3 from 1983 the list contains, among others: " Andreas Paulsen Berg, 35 years, with wife Lise Johnsdatter, 34 1/2 years and children Adolf Severin, b. 27.12.1857, Jonas, b. 6.10.1859, Halfdan Ludvig, b. 2.5.1862, Martin, b. 8.11.1864 and Paul Johan, b. 23.5.1867. To Red Wing in Minnesota. From Kongsberg 1868." (The original text is in Norwegian, translated by me.) I know this is second hand information and may be incorrect, but when I found Andreas Berg in the shipslist from 1868, I thought I had reason to belive the year was correct, though with an incorrect no. of children. Hope you will find the correct data. I would be pleased if you let me know. Arne
ninakarlsarnehol, your info must be correct, if son Paul died at sea, the emigration must have taken place in 1868, as Dick actually has his death date as May 12th 1868. From FamilySearch: Lise JOHANSDATTER Birth: 17 Aug 1833 Christening: 03 May 1834 Place: Kongsberg, Buskerud, Norway Father: Johan LARSEN Mother: Berthe Chathrine ANDERSDR Can this be Andreas' wife?
brketoKARREN PEDERSDATTER OVERBOE PEDERSON was wife of Martin ; Martin’s father was, Andreas Paulson Bergh Born; at Kongsberg, Norway Aug 28 , 1833 Died April 21, 1914 Married 1st wife; Lise Johansdatter Lovlia at Kongsberg, Norway. BorgeThat 1868 list is one of those with very limited information listed. Actually there are no deaths recorded on the list, and I guess the captain made it just before the arrival. These lists were actually made for customs purposes, and the passenger list was of interest to the Canadian government in regards of the landing fee to be calculated. Passengers who perished on the ocean were not counted. Here is a scan of the first page of the Rjukan list:

VenstopV
VenstopI am interested in Johan Larsen Løvlien (Husfader Sadelmager g 56 m Bærums værk in 1865), my ancestor. He was born in 1810. Where was he or his father in 1801? I notice there is a Lovlien for Askershus, Hedmark, and Oppland in 1801.
jwiborg[:)] If he was born in 1810, where do you believe he was in 1801??? I doubt strongly that you will find him in the 1801-census... [:I] However, census-1865 lists his birthplace as "Bærums værk". Churchbooks for Vestre Baerum parish, Akershus county, for the time around Johan's birth does not look to be available online. HopkinsI don't understand what Johan Larsen Løvlien has to do with Andreas Bergh and this thread as it was discussed in 2005. Am I missing a connection in this somewhere? http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0604&kenr=0279&bnr=0282&lnr=000
