Traces after Monset/Monseth of Orkdalen
muinn	My grandfather on my mother's side came from a family where 3 of the boys went to America for some years. My grandfather for 4 years, his brother for over 40 years, and their little brother, well, I don't know for how long he went, but he was in Canada until 1936 I think. My challenge now is: Can there be found traces of them there? I haven't been able to find anything on the web, other than their arrival at Ellis Island (for two of them). Let me give some more information about them: Anders Monseth was born in July 1885 in Orkdal, (or "Ørkedalen" as the old name was) a place outside Trondheim. Anders went from Christiania April 23 1909, and arrived at Ellis Island May 5 1909. He was going to Seattle then, but he later settled in Tacoma. As we in the family has understood it, he lived in Tacoma all of the years he lived in the States. In about 1953 he went back to Norway, somewhat 68 years old. He lived his last years in Orkdal, Norway, until he died in 1963 (I think). So, he went to the States 23 years old, worked at the lumbermills in Tacoma in 44 years, and came back as a senior citizen to live in Norway. I wonder why I am not able to find him in any census? As far as I know, there should be 3 of them: 1910, 1920 and 1930. A letter to my grandfather has a "Box" adress in Tacoma as the the adress of "the sender", so I guess he lived in downtown Tacoma city/town. My grandfather Ingebrigt Monset was born May 14 1891 in Orkdalen, arrived at Ellis Island October 15 1923 (ship "Leviathan" sailing from Southampton). By the way, he was listed as "Ingelnek Manseth" in the ship manifest at Ellis Island [:)], so suprises when it comes to spelling in this genealogy business do occur! He stayed in the northwest, Washington and Oregon states from 1923 until 1928, working as a lumberjack in the redwood forests. I am currently working with his letters to my grandmother, so I will find some names of "camps" I guess, but I haven't been able to find traces of him on the web other than Ellis Island. Of course, he "missed" the censuses, being there from 1923 until 1928. The last of the brothers, Ola Monseth born 1900, stayed in Canada, working as a miner, I've been told. I just found him, listed as "Ole", leaving in April 23 1929 from Trondheim, prob. April 25 from Norway, with "Bergensfjord". He came back to Norway in 1936. Aasmund

muinn	I am searching, but I can't find it. I am searching on "Ancestry.com". Are there any other sources to the 1920 census for Washington state? Aasmund
Brining	I use Heritage Quest. It was probably done by a different transcriber so different results. When I look at the image his name looks like Anders Monsett or Monseth. I don't know how Ancestry works but what I did was search for Males born in Norway, age 30-39 in Pierce county. If it helps here is microfilm information. muinn	Thanks! Now I found him at the bottom of the same page as those others. I can now search for him in the 1910 and 1930 censuses. Maybe I have to read name by name? I could try to search after those neighbours in 1920. If I know my family history, he didn't move much around. He wrote my grandfather in 1937 and told him that he hadn't been in Seattle since he was there, and my grandfather left for Norway in spring 1928! Still, he is listed as "Boarder", so I guess he didn't buy a house of his own. Aasmund

muinn	Hi! I tried to mail "Aspmann", but got a message of error. I am currently working on an essay about "Storstuggu". I don't know were your name and folks came from, but I guess there may be several relations. My mother is Aase Monset, my grandfather was Ingebrigt Monset, born at Bortstuggu, as the son of Ane Ingebrigtsdatter Storstuggu Monset and Ola A. Monset at Bortsuggu. Her grandfather bought Aspjhell "Oppistuggu" in the 1840s, and his daughter Karen got the farm.
