confused about place names
medic12965I have found a family tree of ancestors in Norway but have a few questions about place names. First of all in the case of Olav Aslakson Midtbo- is Midtbo the farm that Olav would have been born on?? This is how the info is presented to me: Olav Aslakson Midtbo Born: 1875- Sollid u/ Hauge What does "Sollid u/Hauge" mean? I presume these are also place names. Can anyone make light of this situation? Also Guro Jorgensdatter Utigard born at "Utigard i Byrte i Tokke"I know Utigard is the farm and Tokke is the parish but what does Byrte mean? One more question. What does the place name "Nesland" refer to. I know Telemark is the County and Vinje is the municipality in question but I am confused as to the reference of Nesland. Thanks in advance.
BorgeAll these names are actually names of farms and places. Midtbø is a farm, and a person living on a farm would be identified by adding the farm name as a kind of surname. However, when a person moved from one farm to another, he would be identified by the name of the new farm he moved to. Sollid u/Hauge could be reference to a cotters farm Sollid under the main farm Hauge. Byrte is the name of the place, - Utigard situated at Byrte, situated in Tokke. I am not familiar with the place, and you do not say where in Norway it is, so I can't say the exact relationship between the names. Nesland sounds like the name of a farm. Maybe someone else knows these places better, what parts of Norway did they come from? Did you read the article on this site about Norwegian names? medic12965Hi Borge. Tokke was a parish of the town Mo located in Telemark. I know Utigard was a farm but don't know if it was a subfarm or what. Does this help identify what or where Byrte refers to. Also on an old map of telemark I also saw the name Naesland which covered the region around Mo and Vinje. Could Naesland be the previous name of the county before it was Telemark? I hope this helps. Thanks.
HopkinsNesland is the name of a parish within the Telemark clerical district (prestegjeld) of Vinje. Before 1769 the parishes of Mo and Skafså (Skafse) had been part of the prestegjeld of Fyresdal. The 1865 census indicates a farm by the name of "Solid" in the parish of Skafse which was then a part of the prestegjeld called Mo. That same census shows one farm by the name of "Midbø el. Utistog" Midbø later Utistog which is located within Mo prestegjeld - and also listed as within the school district called "Børte" (which brought what you called 'Byrte' to mind). You might be well served to verify carefully the information given to you. The geography of locations might have somehow gotten "scrambled". Spellings might be taken from variations used in time periods which are difficult to identify today. The bygdebøk for Mo district in Telemark should have explanations of this history and possibly help you to identify the names of the farms and other divisions there. "Mo bygdebok: gaard-og ætt", 2 volumes by Steinar Marvik. Vinje and the history of the district and its farms would be in the book(s) written for that area - "Vinje og Rauland", 4? volumes by Rikard Berge.
