looking for pass-list Carmania 1910
redtazI am looking for passenger lists for ship Carmania from 1910. My grandfather a Norway emigrant came to U.S. at that time, I think NewYork. (Thoroff /Torolf Olsen)Soberg
HopkinsYour grandfather would be most likely to have boarded the Carmania in Liverpool for the trans-Atlantic voyage - after taking a smaller vessel from Norway. Arrivals in New York would have been processed at Ellis Island in 1906. The passenger lists of arrivals would be in the possession of the US National Archives - and probably copies also available for use through the LDS Family History Library system. Passenger lists at the Family History Library are listed in the Family History Library Catalog Locality Search under NEW YORK, NEW YORK (CITY) - EMIGRATION AND IMMIGRATION. If your ancestor arrived in New York between 1890 and 1930 and you know the name of the vessel, you may be able to determine the date of arrival by checking Morton Allen Directory of European Passenger Steamship Arrivals . . . (1931; reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing, 1980; FHL book 973 U3m 1980; fiche 6046854; computer number 30102).
Jo Anne SadlerThe Morse-Ellis Island database lists 11 arrivals for the Carmania in New York Harbor in 1906: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ Do you have his emigration record from Norway? That would lead to clues. How old was he? Was he traveling alone?
HopkinsThe 1900 Norwegian census does show a 'Torolf' Olsen living on a farm called Søberg in Stange, Hedmark, Norway. He is only 4 years old at the time of the 1900 census. Is this the same as sailed on the Carmania just 6 years later?
redtazTHANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH, WITH YOUR HELP I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT MY GRANDFATHERS NAME WAS NOT SPELLED (THOROFF) WHEN HE WAS IN NORWAY AND WAS MOST LIKELY SPELLED (TOROLF) ACCORDING TO MY FATHER. I ALSO FOUND OUT HE CAME TO U.S. IN 1910 NOT 1906 ON CAMANIA. HE WAS BORN 1896 MAKING HIM 4 YR. OLD IN 1900. IT ALL SEEMS TO FIT NOW THANKS.
Jo Anne SadlerYou can find him on the Morse/Ellis Island database: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ Olsen Soberg, Tnorsel, age 14 from Gratte, Norway Arrived New York harbor on May 1, 1910 from Liverpool, ship Camania. Also traveling an Ole Solberg, age 20 and an Anders Olsen Gratte.
