norwegian ancestor possibly in cival war
justwonderingWould anyone know how to find out if Andrew Hannevig fought in the American Civil war. The family lore says he did. He was a norwegian and a family member. Justwondering
Jo Anne SadlerThere is a lot of information on the web about the Civil War. Do you know where he lived or would have enlisted from?
landsAccording to the Vesterheim site which has a fairly complete list of Norwegians that served, there is no Andrew Hannevig listed. This does not necessairily mean that he did not serve as many Norwegians enlisted under different names.

Thanks for asking. Only know his name. He may have used the norwegian Anders for Andrew. He disappeared from the family radar before the civil war ,but was rumoured to have joined. There was a branch of the family in the Chicago area . Amy

Jo Anne SadlerHere is a posting on an Ancestry.com message board, don't know if you have seen it: http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:707190&id=I116 Son Sigurd was in San Francisco in the 1920 census, born Illinois. He is in Sausalito, CA in the 1930 census. He died in Marin County, CA on October 4, 1851. The Ancestry.com Immigration database shows an Andrew Hannevig, born 1842, resident of U.S. arriving in New York Harbor on September 1, 1888 from Norway, ship Island. He probably went to Norway on a visit. There is also information on Rootsweb for Anders Hannevig.[:)]

justwonderingThis is fabulous. It is clicking into place. It was actually his grandson I met , same name Walter Hannevig. But definetly the correct Anders. He is listed as saloon owner. My great aunt and her father went to visit a family member who ran a saloon in Chicago, as she was studying in Minnesota, anyway they were chased away with a shotgun , not welcome. That is also a family story. So that was him. Thanks Amy
Jo Anne SadlerHe is listed in the Familysearch.org 1880 census as Andrew Hannaweg. Something to keep in mind when doing research. The State of Illinois has a Civil War database but could not find him listed there: http://www.sos.state.il.us/GenealogyMWeb/civilwar.html
jmonsonIf you haven't found him yet, really start using your imagination on names that he could have used. If you know his patronymic, use that instead of his farm name. Also try "Yenki" equivalents. For example, I finally found Gulbrand Gulbrandsen Vinger had enlisted as George Gilbert. Also be sure to look under the pension records. He is more likely to have applied for his pension under the name you have listed. The name he used when he enlisted will also be in the pension application, so you can then locate the original enlistment record. In my example, he did apply for his pension as Gulbrand Vinger, with George Gilbert also listed in the application.
