Websites re. 1870s Emigrants to New Zealand
NearNorsewoodThe New Zealand Govt has just launched (today) a free online Encyclopedia about New Zealand called "Te Ara" (in Maori, Te Ara means ‘the pathway’). It includes some info about "1870s: assisted migration" which includes basic info about the Scandinavian immigration programmes. The home page URL is: www.teara.govt.nz The page with info about assisted immigration is: www.teara.govt.nz/NewZealanders/NewZealandPeoples/Scandinavians/2/en
BorgeGreat, I included a link to this post from the "NORSEWOOD - NEW ZEALAND" article. Thanks!
NearNorsewoodThanks for the link, Børge. I think I should describe the purpose of the "Norsewood Cemetery Project" website. It really has two objectives: (1) The website, itself, is aimed at (eventually) providing online information for those trying to trace family trees, in either chronological direction, via Norsewood settlers; and (2) We hope to (eventually) publish a book about the graves at Norsewood with some of the genealogical information from the website which could be useful to genealogists who get stumped at the point where the Norsewood settlers left Norway/arrived in New Zealand. My hope is to track all settlers and families for 2+ generations in each chronological direction. Obviously, we don't know all the families' details, so we would be pleased to hear from anyone who is able to help with information with either of these projects, particularly if they have supporting documentation. (This would also help speed up the process!) We will give credit for information supplied. A number of graves in the pioneer blocks in the Tararua District Council plan of Norsewood Cemetery (a portion of which is here: www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/cemetery/plan.html) are marked "unknown". If anyone has information about the identity of the persons buried there, we would be pleased to hear from them.
HopkinsWhich of the databases clearly indicates the persons already identified in Norway and gives at the least the beginning of any available genealogical information? The database of First Adult Male Settlers at Norsewood (1872) indicates links for some of the names - is this the file? I'm trying to determine if there is any way to tell which names have already been identified and work been done on.
NearNorsewoodYes, you can link from there. WHen the list of graves is complete, you will be able to link from there, too. We're using a variety of sources, including oral history. My family has had a 130 year association with Norsewood. My *living* grandmother is the daughter of one of the 1872 immigrants(!!!) and is a mine of information. She only moved away from Norsewood a few years ago, and will turn 99 this year. My mother grew up in Norsewood and has written a book on the people of the Garfield, Norsewood area. She also knew many of the settlers. My gUncle was AL Andersen who wrote the Norsewood centenary book. There's been quite a bit of work done on the Johan Fredrik MORTENSEN descendants and Emmanuel FREDERIKSON descendants (not yet online). At the moment we're just trying to connect people via known relationships and link those to the graves at Norsewood cemetery. We'll start filling in details after that. Given the numbers of people involved, this is likely to become a long-term project.
HopkinsAnother descendant of emigrants on the 1872 Hovding trip posted to the Norway-List on Rootsweb in 2004. Her ancestors were Anders Larsen and wife Anne Thorine (shown on the Hoving passenger list with residence Fredrikstad and with three young children.) Anders and his wife were living in Rakkestad, Østfold at the time of the 1865 Norwegian census. The names of the districts in Norway where each were born are listed in that census. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60128&gardpostnr=692&personpostnr=4238&merk=4238#ovre That New Zealand resident and descendant of Hovding emigrants is probably just the type of person you wish to have involved in your project. I briefly searched the archives of that mailing list for words Norsewood or Hovding through several years of the archives and encountered a number of other persons who have been researching emigrants who share that history. You can find those archives through this link - http://members.tdn.com/~dagwood/NorwayList.htm

Great ideas. Thanks. I'll follow them up. I have already had some Thomas Jensen descendants contact me. (For info on this family, see here: http://www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/jensen-thomas-descendants/index.php) I also plan to contact the appropriate Scandinavian clubs and the National Genealogical Society.
JudzRe a message about Anders & Anna Larsen by a member named Hopkins - could you please contact me at j.larsen@paradise.net.nz. Thanks
HopkinsI'd prefer to respond here.
JudzHi I was just wondering about the message re Anders & Anna Larsen. I was inquiring to see who else was researching this Family. I looked at Rootsweb 2004 and could not find anything that was mentioned. It was just an innocent question for you to contact me Judz
HopkinsJudith - Since February the URL for the (RootsWeb) Norway-List homepage has changed - that is why the link was no longer functional. But the Norway-List archives were actually showing discussions that YOU were involved in and I'm sure as a member of the Norway-List yourself you've already learned how to use the archives for that list. I'm not related to Anders and Anna Larsen of New Zealand and have no information about them that I didn't post previously in this thread.
JudzSorry I thought that it was someone else researching my family - that is why I got a bit excited. I know that I belong to the list but thought you were talking about something else. SORRY
heidifindyPip, You mentioned in your post that your grandmother may remember some of the resident's from the Norsewood area. Do you know if she remembers any of the Findsen Family. I am a descendant of Christopher Findsen (Finsen) who arrived around 1872.
heidifindyDoes anyone know when "Norsewood, The Centennial Story" will be available? Thanks.
