Known Errors in 1872 Høvding Emigrant Records
NearNorsewoodI am working my way through the emigrant records for the 1872 Høvding and plan to post identified errors here and on my website (see signature profile). Digitalarkivet (see http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=25106&personpostnr=25106&spraak=e) identifies the following as a family group: 25106 Oslo 384A 1872 30 August Andersen m G Arb. 24 Skallerød, Sv. New Zealand 1286 Svensk œ 24,- Høvding 25107 Oslo 384B 1872 30 Amalie Andersen f G 24 Skallerød, Sv. New Zealand 1287 Svensk œ 24,- Høvding 25108 Oslo 384C 1872 30 Oline Andersen f u 6 Skallerød, Sv. New Zealand 1288 Svensk œ 24,- Høvding 25109 Oslo 384D 1872 30 Samuel Andersen f u 3 Skallerød, Sv. New Zealand 1289 Svensk œ 24,- Høvding ERROR 1: Oline and Samuel are NOT the children of August and Amalie ANDERSEN. They are the children of Emmanuel and Helena FREDERIKSON (correct surname spelling for New Zealand) who are listed at Digitalarkivet (see http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=25083&personpostnr=25083&spraak=e) as: 25083 Oslo 377A 1872 30 Emanuel Fredriksen m G Arb. 37 Fredrikstad New Zealand 1263 Norsk œ 32,- Høvding 25084 Oslo 377B 1872 30 Elene Eriksen f G 42 Fredrikstad New Zealand 1264 Norsk œ 32,- Høvding ERROR 2: Samuel is male. (Digitalarkivet has him recorded as female). ERROR 3: Emmanuel and Helena FREDERIKSON and their family are listed as Norwegian. They were, in fact, Swedish. However, least 3 of their children - including Oline, Samuel, and Johannes - were born in Norway. MORE INFO: Emmanuel and Helena (JOHANNESEN) FREDERIKSON came to New Zealand (NZ) with 6 children, including: 25085 Oslo 377C 1872 30 Johanne Lise f u 14 Fredrikstad New Zealand 1265 Norsk œ 32,- Høvding 25086 Oslo 377D 1872 30 Carl Fredrik Fredriksen m u 11 Fredrikstad New Zealand 1266 Norsk œ 32,- Høvding 25087 Oslo 377E 1872 30 Erik Fredriksen m u 9 Fredrikstad New Zealand 1267 Norsk œ 32,- Høvding 25088 Oslo 377F 1872 30 Johannes Fredriksen m u 10/12åR Fredrikstad New Zealand 1268 Norsk œ 32,- Høvding Plus Oline and Samuel, as above. They had a 7th child, Deborah, born in NZ. Amalie ANDERSON is Emmanuel FREDERIKSON's neice (sister's daughter). Emmanuel FREDERIKSON's wife, Helena, is believed to be related to Emmanuel, possibly a distant cousin.
Jo Anne SadlerI am a little confused by your posting. Are you transcribing the Høvding passenger list? You can make your comments in the remarks column but you should transcribe the list exactly as it is presented in the official document. Passenger lists were done quickly to satisfy the requirements of the customs agents. There is also the possibility that the digitalarivet records are incorrect. This was a secondary source as are passenger lists. The primary source for accuracy would be the actual parish records.[;)]
BorgePip is working on the original list from the arrival at New Zealand, and by comparing it to the online version at Digitalarkivet has found discrepancies. We can make a note of these differences if we get the list online at the site here, and we could do some research from other sources, like the census re cords. I wonder if the Fredrikson family are listed in the Swedish emigration CD, does anyone have access to look it up? Are you thinking of making a contribution to the Norway-Heritage Project - emigrant database by submitting the transcribed lists to be included? [:X]
NearNorsewoodThe 1872 Høvding passenger incorrectly listed as Edvard ANDREASEN RAURVIG was really Edvart ANDERSEN LAURVIG. In New Zealand, he was known as Edward LAURVIG. See emigrant record http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=25225&personpostnr=25225&spraak=e He was aged 19 and living with his parents in 1865 Census - see http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=f60419.wc2&gardpostnr=1022&personpostnr=6481&merk=6481#ovre Edvart's wife, listed as Lina on emigrant records, was Karoline (Lena) SØRENSDATTER, known in New Zealand as Caroline (Lena) LAURVIG. They emigrated to New Zealand with their 3 children (Anna, Didrik Magnus, and Marie/Maren) and had 4 others in New Zealand (Caja, Maria, Ellen, and Ludwig Edward). Lena died 02/July/1879 after giving birth to their seventh child. See www.norsewoodcemetery.co.nz/l/laurvig-edvart.html for more info.
